JOH CH116: Digging Through the Trash
Soon, they completed the paperwork and bought the car back.
Gu Yuanting noticed the car was covered in dust. This secondhand market was really rundown—overgrown with weeds, the sales office was just a makeshift shack with only two staff members. Clearly, the place wasn’t well-maintained, which explained why the car had sat there unsold for a whole year.
God only knew how he had found this obscure market in the first place. Gu Yuanting’s heart was pounding.
“Ranran, let’s get the car washed first,” Gu Yuanting said, wiping dust off the hood, frowning in pain.
Su Yiran nodded, “I think I saw a car wash nearby.”
There was dust inside the car too, so Gu Yuanting got two towels from the sales office, bent down, and cleaned the front seats, back seats, and trunk thoroughly.
Su Yiran’s brow twitched silently.
After a busy while, they had the driver take the new car home, while they drove the old car to a nearby car wash. Soon, it was shining and polished, restored to its original shine.
“Only the house is left now,” Gu Yuanting relaxed as he drove the car back to their garage. Last night, he had already contacted the current occupants of their old house. When they heard his offer, they agreed without hesitation. The contract and ownership transfer would be done soon, and they would move out.
In just a few days, their old home would be back in their hands.
That was their little home, shared by Gu Yuanting and Ranran.
Sadly, others had lived there since, erasing many of their old memories.
Thinking about this made Gu Yuanting feel like having a heart attack again, cursing himself.
After buying back the old house, he vowed to restore everything exactly as it had been, down to every tiny detail.
Su Yiran nodded thoughtfully, “Yeah, only the house left, right?”
Gu Yuanting also remembered their old family home, where he had once thought about hiring a bulldozer to flatten it. Just the thought made him break out in a cold sweat.
Too terrifying.
If the old house really got bulldozed, no matter how well they rebuilt it, it could never make up for the loss.
Luckily, it hadn’t happened yet.
Gu Yuanting said, “I already asked about that broken matchmaking fortune stick. The master said it can be restored, but there will be flaws. If you look closely, you can still see where it broke.”
Su Yiran didn’t really care much, but since Gu Yuanting was attached to it, he nodded along, “Good. After it’s fixed, we can keep it with the other one. Just don’t break it again.”
Gu Yuanting nodded seriously.
“Your parents should be here soon, right?” Su Yiran glanced at the clock—it was past eleven. Today, his parents were bringing the baby over. Gu Yuanting had sent the driver to pick them up at the old home, and they’d arrive around noon, just in time for lunch.
After the shooting incident, Gu Yuanting was unconscious. Su Yiran had been worried about his injury at first and hadn’t thought to contact his parents. Later, when Gu Yuanting stabilized but still hadn’t woken up, Su Yiran learned from the doctor that his condition was no longer critical. He then informed his parents but hid the details of the shooting, only saying Gu Yuanting had been injured in an accident but was now fine, so they wouldn’t worry.
His parents had been anxious and wanted to come right away, but Su Yiran convinced them to wait a day. They set off early this morning from their hometown.
“This time they’re bringing the baby over, so we don’t have to leave the baby back home anymore,” Su Yiran said.
Hearing the mention of the baby, Gu Yuanting’s heart stirred. Just then, the doorbell rang. Su Yiran quickly got up to open the door, with Gu Yuanting following behind, surprisingly nervous, his heart pounding loudly.
The door opened, and Su Yiran’s father came in first, immediately concerned, “Tingting, how’s your injury? Is your head still hurting?”
“Mom, Dad, I’m fine. No headache,” Gu Yuanting greeted them but couldn’t help glancing at the baby in Su Yiran’s mother’s arms.
The baby was fair-skinned and adorable, with a chubby round face that melted hearts. Being held by Su Yiran’s mother, the baby’s big pure eyes looked around curiously, and when they landed on Gu Yuanting, the baby suddenly smiled.
Gu Yuanting held his breath and smiled back involuntarily.
“Good, good,” Su Yiran’s mother sighed in relief, then handed the baby to Gu Yuanting, “You must have missed the baby. Our little one misses Daddy too. Look at that smile.”
Gu Yuanting gently held the baby and kissed the chubby cheeks softly.
This was their baby, their little angel.
He hated himself for once thinking the baby wasn’t his, even having cruel thoughts.
Thinking of that possibility made his heart shrink in fear and guilt.
Su Yiran missed the baby too and poked the baby’s chubby face gently. The baby cooed and grasped Su Yiran’s finger.
Su Yiran couldn’t resist kissing the baby’s little hand and cheeks, then smiled at Gu Yuanting, “The baby knows we’re the dads.”
Gu Yuanting looked at Su Yiran, then the baby, his heart melting like cotton candy. “Of course, of course.”
“Alright, stop standing there. Come inside,” Su Yiran’s father laughed.
The family ate lunch together. Since their phone call yesterday wasn’t clear, Su Yiran’s parents started asking what happened and why Gu Yuanting got injured suddenly.
They were old, and the shooting was too scary a story for them. Su Yiran worried it would keep them up at night, so he hid the truth, saying Gu Yuanting and he were eating out and Gu Yuanting accidentally slipped down some steps, hitting his head.
“Tingting, you’re so careless,” Su Yiran’s mother said while checking the bandage on Gu Yuanting’s head, “And you didn’t even tell us you were hurt until yesterday.”
Gu Yuanting smiled, “I’m fine, Mom, Dad. Please don’t worry.”
His parents sighed, scolding a little but relieved when they saw he was okay. Then they chatted about other things, especially baby stories.
Talking about the baby, their faces lit up with smiles. They chatted and laughed all afternoon and evening, sharing joyful stories about the baby.
Night came. Su Yiran’s parents went to bed, and the baby, having had milk, was already asleep in the nanny’s arms, carried back to the nursery. Su Yiran and Gu Yuanting came to check on the baby before sleeping. The nanny left discreetly, leaving space for the little family.
Su Yiran lightly touched the baby in the crib, feeling some guilt. Over the past months, with Gu Yuanting’s illness, most of his attention had been on him, often neglecting the baby, even leaving the baby at their hometown.
Su Yiran resolved to make it up to the baby double.
Gu Yuanting felt even more guilty. He remembered when he was amnesiac, how he initially thought the baby wasn’t his and disliked the baby. Though he eventually accepted the baby, the baby had suffered a lot.
“Sorry,” Gu Yuanting apologized to the baby.
“I’m not your stepdad—I’m your real dad.”
Su Yiran first thought Gu Yuanting was apologizing for neglect during illness but then recalled Gu Yuanting’s odd reactions when Su Yiran found out he was pregnant.
“Gu Yuanting, wait… you…” Su Yiran gave him a look like he was crazy, “You always thought… the baby wasn’t yours?”
Gu Yuanting shifted uncomfortably, “No, how could that be?”
Su Yiran saw through him instantly and almost wanted to hit him. But seeing Gu Yuanting’s still healing head, he restrained himself, just pinching his cheeks lightly, “You…”
Gu Yuanting knew Su Yiran had forgiven him again, so he hugged him and kissed him, “Sorry, you worked so hard then, but I…”
When Su Yiran was pregnant and gave birth, he suffered so much, while Gu Yuanting’s mind was filled with wild jealousy, paranoia, and false assumptions.
Thinking back, Gu Yuanting’s face turned dark—blue, purple, and even green.
“I forgive you. You weren’t easy either,” Su Yiran laughed at Gu Yuanting’s dramatic expressions, feeling both heartache, gratitude, and amusement.
“Now I’m better. From now on, the three of us will live happily,” Gu Yuanting said earnestly, “I’ll take good care of you and the baby.”
“You already do,” Su Yiran smiled and touched Gu Yuanting’s face.
Even when amnesiac and doubting the baby, Gu Yuanting treated them well. Su Yiran felt his heart fill with warmth. He knew it was because Gu Yuanting loved him so much.
Su Yiran kissed Gu Yuanting, “I’ll also take good care of you and the baby.”
Warmth filled Gu Yuanting’s heart as he cuddled Su Yiran. Just as he wanted to kiss him deeply, the baby suddenly cried loudly.
Gu Yuanting froze.
Su Yiran quickly moved aside, checked the baby, and realized he had wet himself. While changing the diaper, Su Yiran ordered Gu Yuanting, “Go get a new diaper.”
Gu Yuanting quickly fetched it and changed the baby. The baby kept crying, so Su Yiran held and soothed him, then told Gu Yuanting, “Go make a bottle.”
After the chaos, the baby finally drank milk and stopped crying. Both men exchanged smiles.
After putting the baby to sleep, they went back upstairs to the master bedroom to sleep.
Gu Yuanting thought about the interrupted kiss and looked at Su Yiran, feeling restless. After waking, he hadn’t had a proper intimate moment with Su Yiran.
During his amnesia, helped by illness and jealousy, they had many such moments. Su Yiran was always gentle and accepting, always agreeing to whatever he wanted, even when embarrassed.
Gu Yuanting’s mind drifted to those wild nights, the way Su Yiran responded warmly, and his body reacted strongly.
“Ranran…” Gu Yuanting’s voice was hoarse as he held him close and nuzzled, asking for love.
Su Yiran felt Gu Yuanting pressing against him and blushed. He cleared his throat seriously and pushed Gu Yuanting away, shaking his head, “No, the doctor said your wounds aren’t healed yet. No rough moves.”
Given Gu Yuanting’s wild energy when excited, Su Yiran really worried.
After that, Su Yiran pushed him away, climbed into bed first, and wrapped himself tightly in the covers, leaving no chance for Gu Yuanting, “Go drink some water and calm down before sleeping.”
Gu Yuanting never expected Su Yiran to reject him, and not only reject intimacy but even the bed!
He stood at the bedside dumbfounded, looked down at himself, and sadly went to drink water.
He felt a little jealous.
When he was amnesiac, they had tried every position, and Su Yiran never refused but was gentle and agreed.
Did Su Yiran prefer the amnesiac version of him?
Gu Yuanting finished the water, sulked quietly, then thought he was crazy.
Such a fool.
He returned a bit flustered, crawled back into bed, and cuddled Su Yiran.
Su Yiran felt Gu Yuanting calm down and relaxed, kissing him, “Sleep now.”
He had to get up early tomorrow to go to the shop. Zhang Xiaohong had been managing the shop mostly, as he hadn’t visited for a while.
Gu Yuanting held Su Yiran a while longer, still feeling jealous but resigned.
After a while, he kissed Su Yiran softly and whispered, “Ranran, I’ll be gentle, I promise… okay?”
Su Yiran was almost asleep, drowsy and not really aware of what Ting-ge was saying. He half-heartedly replied with an “Mm.”
…Then, he suddenly felt the buttons of his pajamas being undone.
…And then, Su Yiran was awakened.
Su Yiran: “…”
Well, considering Ting-ge was injured but still persistent, it was pretty impressive.
…
…
The next day, Gu Yuanting woke up feeling refreshed.
The car was bought, the house was bought, the things buried in the basement were all found, the baby was back, and Ranran was intimate and loving with him again.
Life was complete, wasn’t it?
He must be the happiest person in the world.
“Ting-ge, are you going to the company today? I have to go to the shop,” Su Yiran put on his sweater, then turned to Gu Yuanting and said, “I haven’t been there for a while, I’ll go check it out.”
“I’ll take you there,” Gu Yuanting quickly offered, but his eyes were fixed on Ranran and the off-white sweater he was wearing.
Ranran looked really good in that sweater. Gu Yuanting wanted to hug him, touch him, kiss him, and more.
Thinking it, he acted on it—he went forward, hugged Ranran, and lovingly kissed his soft lips.
Ranran hugged Ting-ge back and kissed him for a while, then smiled and pushed him away: “Alright, let’s go downstairs to have breakfast first.”
Gu Yuanting also knew this wasn’t the right time for anything else and reluctantly let go, holding Ranran’s hand. As they stepped out of the room, he suddenly felt something was off.
He glanced again at the off-white sweater Ranran was wearing.
Sweater…
No, no, something was wrong. Gu Yuanting froze, stiffened.
This sweater was the one he knitted for Ranran during his amnesiac period. Besides this off-white one, there was also a pink-and-white sweater…
But before his memory loss, the pink-and-white sweater he had knitted for Ranran back in college was thrown away by himself in a fit of jealousy!
Seeing him stop suddenly, Su Yiran was puzzled: “What’s wrong?”
Gu Yuanting looked pale: “You go downstairs first. I’m going back to the room to find something.”
Concerned, Su Yiran asked, “What are you looking for? I can help.”
“Just a piece of clothing, it’s nothing,” Gu Yuanting replied. “You go eat first, I’ll come down soon.”
“Okay, just come down quickly when you’re done,” Su Yiran said and went downstairs.
Back in the bedroom, Gu Yuanting frantically rummaged through boxes and drawers but couldn’t find it anywhere.
He desperately recalled where he had thrown the sweater and then remembered—it was thrown away in the old house, who knows where it ended up.
Gu Yuanting slumped on the bed, sitting dazed for a long time.
That sweater had been worn close to Ranran’s body for years, full of his scent. He sometimes secretly smelled it. But now…
It was thrown away! Gone!
Su Yiran, having finished breakfast with his parents, found Gu Yuanting still hadn’t come downstairs. Going upstairs, he saw Gu Yuanting sitting there in a mess, the wardrobe turned upside down, looking sad and troubled.
Su Yiran: “…”
He was already used to Gu Yuanting’s occasional cluelessness since regaining his memory. He suspected it might be because the head injury hadn’t fully healed and the memories had just returned, causing moments of confusion.
Dr. Sun had also warned to be careful not to let Gu YuanTing-get stimulated, or he might experience temporary cognitive disarray.
But no need to worry too much; a few days of rest would bring him back to normal.
Su Yiran went over and patted Gu Yuanting’s still healing head: “What’s wrong? Didn’t find the sweater?”
Gu Yuanting held Ranran’s hand and looked up at him: “The sweater I knitted for you before… I lost it.”
Hearing this, Su Yiran smiled: “You mean that sweater?” He remembered it well. “It’s not lost, wait, I’ll find it.”
He reached into a hidden compartment in the wardrobe and pulled out the sweater: “Is this the one? You had balled it up and tossed it in the corner. I found it when we moved. Washed it but it’s still wrinkled, just forgot to iron it.”
At the time, he thought Gu Yuanting hadn’t done it on purpose, now realizing it was jealousy again…
Gu Yuanting had been too anxious before and hadn’t noticed the compartment, so he hadn’t found it. Seeing the wrinkled sweater in Ranran’s hand, he mentally scolded himself.
Being jealous over a piece of clothing—such a drama queen.
He carefully unfolded the sweater and tried to smooth out the wrinkles, but it was hopeless. Even if ironed, it couldn’t be worn anymore. Apparently, it had been left in a corner too long and had several mold spots.
Gu Yuanting felt guilty: “I’ll iron it later, but it’s a pity it can’t be worn.”
Su Yiran comforted him: “It’s okay, just keep it as a keepsake. Didn’t you knit me two more? I’m wearing one right now.”
Looking at Ranran’s off-white sweater, Gu Yuanting inexplicably got jealous again, not wanting Ranran to wear the one knitted during his amnesiac period: “I’ll knit you another one.”
Su Yiran: “…Let’s eat first. Ironing and knitting, we’ll talk about that later.”
“Okay,” Gu Yuanting carefully folded the sweater and put it aside, then went downstairs with Ranran.
Su Yiran’s parents had already finished breakfast and asked: “Ting Ting, why did you come down so late?”
Gu Yuanting scanned the living room’s decorations and put on a brave smile: “Got delayed looking for something.”
After breakfast, Gu Yuanting glanced around the living room. Yesterday, he hadn’t noticed, but today, seeing all the new things bought after his amnesia, he felt uncomfortable, green with envy inside, and wanted to throw everything out.
Am I sick?
He seriously questioned himself and quickly shook his head, dismissing the strong urge to toss everything.
These new things were carefully chosen by him and Ranran too. How could he throw them away?
At that moment, Su Yiran put on his coat, picked up his things, and said: “Mom, Dad, Ting-ge and I are going to work. We’ll be back tonight.”
Gu Yiran planned to send Ranran to the shop first, then go to the company to handle work. Although reluctant, wanting to stick with Ranran all day, now that he was better and his memories returned, he couldn’t shirk responsibility. He didn’t want Ranran to see him as irresponsible or idle.
Su Yiran’s parents smiled and nodded, telling them to work with peace of mind. Su Yiran’s mom even said she’d cook for them in the evening.
While driving, Gu Yuanting kept glancing at Ranran, still bothered by the sweater.
He felt he was missing something besides the sweater.
Soon, they arrived at the shop parking lot. Gu Yuanting followed Su Yiran inside.
This was the shop they originally planned to run together, dreaming of spending every day with each other—but now, it wasn’t possible.
Su Yiran surveyed his shop. The “Yi Ting” dessert had already become one of the tourist attractions in City A. Nearly every tourist coming to City A would visit to try this specialty.
He had been busy with Gu Yuanting’s illness and hadn’t had time to manage the shop. Manager Zhang Xiaohong had been running things, only calling him for decisions.
The shop was doing well. Su Yiran greeted Zhang Xiaohong and the staff, then said to Gu Yuanting: “I’ll be busy here, you go to the company. Be careful of your head injury.”
Gu Yuanting’s eyes instead landed on a grotesque, ugly “Yi Ting” wooden carving locked in a glass cabinet behind the counter.
The wooden carving!
Gu Yuanting was shocked. He suddenly realized what he had been ignoring.
The wooden carving they had carved together before had been replaced by this ugly thing!
Where had the old carving gone?
He scolded himself silently and asked Su Yiran: “Ranran, where’s the wooden carving we made together before?”
Su Yiran was stunned, looked toward the mascot in the cabinet, then laughed wryly. It turned out that when Gu Yuanting spent so much money on new wood and rushed to replace the old carving, it was because of jealousy…
He wasn’t surprised anymore. There were so many incidents like this. He couldn’t really blame Gu Yuanting.
Back in high school, Gu Yuanting even feigned illness just to chase away a cat he was jealous of.
Su Yiran thought for a moment: “I think I stored it somewhere in the shop cabinets. I’ll look for it later.”
Gu Yuanting and Ranran searched together and finally found the old carving in a box under the counter. He breathed a sigh of relief, glad he hadn’t thrown it away when Ranran wasn’t looking.
The old carving was professionally restored by an expert, looking much nicer than the new one. Gu Yuanting looked at the old and then the new one with disdain, scolding himself for being useless.
Su Yiran placed the old carving on the counter surface—it wasn’t valuable, so no need to lock it behind glass.
“Alright, the wooden carving is found. You go to the company now,” Su Yiran smiled at Gu Yuanting.
Gu Yuanting nodded thoughtfully, looked once more at the carving. Though things had been found, his heart still felt heavy.
It seemed something very important, always right before his eyes, had been accidentally overlooked.
What could it be?
Gu Yuanting frowned, deep in thought.
“I’ll go now. I’ll come pick you up tonight.” He stepped forward to hug Ranran and kissed him.
Su Yiran touched his face: “Go, and be careful with your head.”
“Mm.” Gu Yuanting squeezed Ranran’s hand and kissed it… kissed it… kissed it…
Then he looked down at Ranran’s ring finger—wearing a dazzling diamond ring.
The main diamond was a sky light diamond—pure and beautiful.
The ring was simple, elegant, and pure, set with tiny diamonds. It was chosen and set by Gu Yuanting himself during the amnesia period.
But the old wedding ring?
Gu Yuanting felt as if struck by a thunderbolt, his head almost scorched black. The wedding ring???
His body bounced like a frightened spring, nearly jumping three feet high.
What a madman, an idiot, a lunatic!
Fortunately, Su Yiran noticed something was wrong with him and worried about his head injury, quickly hugging him: “Ting-ge, what’s wrong?”
Gu Yuanting looked at Ranran, his lips trembling uncontrollably, panic overtaking him, his eyes gradually reddening.
Their wedding rings—the ones they designed and made together, symbolizing their covenant of love—
He had thrown them into the trash! Gone! Oh my god.
Gu Yuanting’s face turned pale. Without thinking further, he hurriedly said to Ranran, “I’m going to the island to find something. I’ll be back tonight, Ranran, wait for me.” Then he tried to leave.
Su Yiran ignored the others still in the shop and immediately hugged Gu Yuanting, trying to calm him: “Don’t worry, don’t rush. What did you lose? Don’t panic, I’ll go with you and we’ll get it back.”
Gu Yuanting recalled how he had lied to Ranran before, saying the ring was stored safely. He dared not admit he had thrown the wedding ring into a trash bin on the island. He stammered, “It’s just a small item, you don’t need to come. I’ll be back soon.”
Seeing Ting-ge reluctant to say more, Su Yiran, based on the past couple of days’ experience, guessed it was something very important, probably lost due to jealous Ting-ge during his amnesia…
Ting-ge was obviously upset, and his head injury wasn’t fully healed yet. Su Yiran was not willing to let him go alone: “I’m going with you. Listen to me, Ting-ge.”
With Su Yiran insisting, Gu Yuanting had no choice. Worried about the wedding ring in the island trash bin, anxious and restless, he immediately called to arrange a plane, then drove with Ranran to the airport.
Su Yiran quickly informed his parents, who had an unexpected matter and wouldn’t come back tonight.
On the way, even after boarding the plane, Gu Yuanting’s heart was restless. He now remembered everything. He recalled throwing the wedding ring into a small, inconspicuous trash bin beside the villa’s fence. It was rarely cleaned because of its hidden location and the island’s sparse population.
It had been so long already. Gu Yuanting prayed hard—please, please! The ring was still there.
Thinking he almost threw the ring into the sea, goosebumps rose on his back, his hair almost standing on end. He broke into cold sweat, terrified by his own recklessness.
Since regaining his memory, he had never remembered this crucial matter. The current pair of “second marriage” rings he and Ranran had gotten used to wearing during his amnesia seemed normal to him now. He never noticed anything odd and foolishly overlooked the past.
“Ting-ge, don’t worry. Once we get there, we’ll find it, okay?” Su Yiran comforted him. “Even if we don’t find it, it’s not the end of the world.”
Gu Yuanting pressed his lips tightly, nodded, but inside he was screaming: It’s important!!
That evening, the plane finally landed at the small island airport. They took a car directly to the villa. Before arriving, Su Yiran saw through the window that the villa was brightly lit—it was clear someone had been notified and was waiting for them.
The car stopped at the villa’s gate. Gu Yuanting said, “Ranran, wait here for me. I’ll find it and come back soon.”
Before Su Yiran could reply, he hurriedly got out and ran wildly toward the trash bin near the side of the villa’s fence.
The butler standing at the gate was about to greet him but saw the boss rush past like a whirlwind, heading toward the fence side. The butler was puzzled—what was over there?
Before Su Yiran could react, Gu Yuanting had already run off. He quickly got out too, anxiously calling after him: “Slow down! Watch your head injury!” and followed him.
Gu Yuanting sprinted to a remote corner near the fence. There was an old small trash bin stuck by the wall. Panting, sweating profusely, he crouched down, grabbed the trash bin lid, and began rummaging inside.
No one knew how long that small trash bin had been there. The island was seldom inhabited, and it was so inconspicuous it hadn’t been cleaned for ages. The garbage inside hadn’t been taken out either.
Gu Yuanting endured the pungent smell and carefully sifted through the bin. The trash was sticky in places, hard in others. After a long time, he still hadn’t found it. Sweat beaded on his nose.
Su Yiran caught up and saw him crouched, digging through the trash bin carefully.
Su Yiran: “…”
Gu Yuanting wiped sweat off his face and decided to dump all the trash out. There were rotten leaves, mud-stained cans, dirty plastic bags—chaotic and filthy stuff. Nobody knew when it had been tossed there.
The butler, Xiao Zhu, and others who had come along with the plane worried about Gu Yuanting and came over, seeing him wandering in the garbage pile, face covered with dirt and black soot, wildly overturning the trash bin, shaking it upside down, refusing to miss any trash.
Butler, Xiao Zhu, entourage: “…”
Sorry, in your boss’s world, things really are different from ours.
Su Yiran noticed their gazes: “…”
He wanted to explain that Ting-ge wasn’t stupid, but he was powerless.
Gu Yuanting was fully immersed in the trash, oblivious to everyone’s strange looks. Except for Ranran, he didn’t care about anyone else.
But after digging so much, covered in sweat, he only found the ring’s box. The red velvet surface was now gray, blackened, and moldy. The ring itself was nowhere to be found.
The wedding ring? The wedding ring?
Having cleaned out the trash bin, Gu Yuanting sat among the garbage, frantically searching to no avail, feeling as if the sky was falling, smoke rising from his head. He wished he could go back and beat the amnesiac version of himself.
Idiot! Look at the mess you made!
