PRYM CH127: The Turmoil of War
Did Li Zhengshen perhaps listen to his suggestion?
After all, not long after he sent the message, he received a reply from Li Zhengshen: [Mm.]
But did Li Zhengshen really not take his suggestion?
Because the very next morning, when Li Zhengshen fulfilled his promise, found a camera for them, and planned to start the all-day live stream, Li Zhengshen casually tossed the camera to a local young man who looked to be just barely an adult!
The young man’s skin color and language were different from theirs. He wore the standard uniform of Li Zhengshen’s company and carried a rifle in his hands.
When Li Zhengshen found him at the entrance of the company branch and approached him, he looked shocked, shyly and fearfully waving his hands at the big boss for a long time.
But after Li Zhengshen babbled something to him, the young man suddenly saluted Li Zhengshen with a serious and excited expression, finally taking the camera from Li Zhengshen’s hands and fixing it to his waist.
Li Zhengshen switched to Mandarin and said to the two before the live stream, “The live stream is on. If you don’t want to watch, let me know anytime.”
Then Li Zhengshen reached out and fiddled with the camera, and the live stream went silent.
And so, the live stream began.
Li Yunhui initially did not show much enthusiasm for the live stream.
Unfortunately, his brother was too proactive, too enthusiastic, pulling him over early on and asking him in a soft, wheedling voice to watch with him.
Li Yunhui had no choice but to nod reservedly. “Alright, just to keep Shuyun company.”
Li Yunhui’s main concern about the live stream’s content was whether there was anything inappropriate that might tempt his brother.
However, just a few days after the live stream started, Li Yunhui found that his worries seemed to be a bit excessive.
On the first day of the live stream, an explosion occurred five hundred meters in front of the camera.
On the second day, a street fight broke out on the next street over from the camera’s location. The fight lasted for a whole afternoon, and blood flowed onto the street where the camera was.
On the third day, an extremely thin, sickly-looking woman holding a baby knelt before the camera, kowtowing and crying, forcefully trying to stuff the baby in her arms into the hands of the camera’s guardian and the other security personnel nearby. In the end, she left, empty-handed and full of gratitude.
…
On the ninth day, it was peaceful, but a tank drove out of the company branch.
On the tenth day, the usually relatively calm picture suddenly began to shake violently. Hundreds of uniformed security personnel poured out of the company and engaged in an extremely fierce firefight with three armored vehicles!
Blood splattered, flesh and gore flew.
The camera suddenly fell to the ground, rolled twice, and when the picture finally stabilized, the familiar figure in the uniform fell straight down in front of the camera. The young man’s eyes were wide open, three dark bullet holes messily pierced his forehead and cheek, and blood covered his face, painting his originally sunny and youthful face into something terrifying.
When it happened, Li Shuyun and Li Yunhui were having dinner.
The accident was too sudden. Li Shuyun was so frightened by the staring eyes that he cried out, and his utensils fell onto the table.
They made a clattering sound.
Li Yunhui’s pupils contracted. He shot up from his chair, the chair scraping harshly against the floor.
He leaned forward, stretched out his hand, reached across the table, and covered his brother’s eyes with one hand.
—”Don’t look!” he shouted subconsciously at his brother.
However, the action seemed unnecessary.
About ten seconds after the camera’s guardian died, messy footsteps trampled over the camera.
The screen shattered, followed by a brief flash of electrical current, and then the screen went completely black!
The camera was broken.
Hearing the commotion from the dining room, the butler hurried over and asked them, “What happened?”
However, only silence answered him.
This silence lasted until the next morning.
Li Zhengshen learned of the camera’s damage and sent them a new private live stream link. The two clicked on the link and found that the camera was new, and the camera’s guardian had also been replaced.
Li Yunhui’s eye twitched heavily.
He clenched his fists and looked at his brother.
He saw his brother’s face filled with pity. He subconsciously grabbed the corner of his clothes, his eyes downcast, and said to him in a low, dejected voice, “Brother, I don’t want to watch anymore.”
Li Yunhui’s tightly clenched fists slowly relaxed.
To be honest, he… was thinking the same thing.
He covered his brother’s hand with his own, and with his other hand, he comfortingly stroked his brother’s head, saying calmly, “Okay, then we won’t watch. I’ll go tell Li Zhengshen for you.”
He immediately sent a message to Li Zhengshen.
Li Yunhui: [Shuyun said he doesn’t want to watch anymore.]
This message was sent only about ten days after the last one.
Li Yunhui thought with some uncertainty that this seemed to be the most frequent communication he had had with Li Zhengshen.
He absentmindedly turned off the live stream, pulled his brother to his side, and coaxed him comfortingly, “Don’t be afraid, Shuyun. You are in the country, very safe. This kind of thing won’t happen to you.”
His brother’s complexion did not improve one bit with his comforting.
Li Shuyun’s brow was furrowed with sorrow. He shook his head and said, “No, brother, that’s not what I’m worried about. I just… find it hard to accept.”
“That person, he… is he really dead? He was about our age, and just a few days ago he took in that auntie’s child, he…”
Li Shuyun’s words were a little jumbled. Li Yunhui pressed his lips and said in a low voice, “That’s enough, Shuyun, don’t think about it anymore. What happened has happened.”
He coaxed his brother like this.
But his own thoughts were inevitably also a little chaotic—wasn’t this also the first time he had come into contact with such a reality of war?
The flying flesh and blood and the corpse with its eyes wide open were vivid in his memory.
Just recalling it, Li Yunhui couldn’t help but feel a little nauseous and uncomfortable.
It wasn’t that he hadn’t imagined the cruel reality of a war-torn area, but no matter how rich his imagination, it was still far too beautiful compared to reality.
For example, the thrill and passion that he imagined should accompany the flying flesh and blood, in reality, all became lives lost under bullets and chaos.
But now, Shuyun was in front of him. Shuyun was already sad enough, anxious enough. He had to set a good example for his brother, be his pillar of support.
So he maintained his composure and stability as much as possible and said to his brother, “That’s a war-torn area. Death and blood are commonplace. Even if he didn’t die yesterday, he could very well have died tomorrow, the day after, any day.”
He paused for a moment and said, “If you can’t even accept a live stream like this, then, Shuyun, you shouldn’t go to that kind of dangerous place.”
The scene Li Zhengshen chose was indeed very effective.
Li Shuyun was quiet for a moment, then obediently lowered his eyes and said, “…I understand, brother. I will think about this matter calmly.”
Li Shuyun paused for a moment, then suddenly said, “I want to call Dad, brother.”
Li Yunhui: “…Huh?”
Li Shuyun said softly, “I don’t know how the injury on Dad’s neck is recovering. I want to see Dad.”
Li Yunhui’s lips tensed. He was silent for a moment, then said, “As you wish.”
Li Shuyun did as he said.
He asked for Li Zhengshen’s free time and successfully scheduled a video call with Li Zhengshen three days later in the evening.
The video call connected. What came into view was the same background as the last call.
Li Zhengshen was sitting on the same leather sofa, a half-burnt cigarette held between his fingers. The bandage on his neck had been removed, leaving only a freshly healed wound on the side of his neck near his ear.
But this time, he had a new wound on his waist. Fresh bandages were wrapped around his lean waist, layer after layer.
He leaned against the sofa, the weight of his waist almost entirely pressed against it. His posture was no longer as dashing and casual as in the last video call.
However, his expression was still calm, his tone unperturbed. Seeing them, he went straight to the point and asked, “Was the live stream useful?”
Li Shuyun said softly, “It was useful, Dad. These past few days of live streaming have taught my brother and me a lot.”
He paused for a moment, then said with great concern, “But, that’s not important, Dad. How did you injure your waist? Is it serious?”
Li Zhengshen lowered his eyes, tapping the cigarette on the ashtray twice, a fine layer of ash falling off. He replied concisely, “A small injury.”
Li Shuyun wouldn’t let him off, pressing, “Was it those same people from before? Competitors? Doesn’t this kind of action violate the local laws? Why isn’t anyone doing anything about them?”
The question was asked with great innocence, something even Li Yunhui knew.
But to his surprise, Li Zhengshen just looked up at his brother and patiently, and just as concisely, answered, “No. This time it was another competitor. The security here is very poor, no one can manage it.”
Li Zhengshen paused for a moment, then added another sentence, “The situation is chaotic recently. It’ll be fine after this period. Don’t worry.”
“As for you two—”
Li Zhengshen naturally changed the subject. “Since the live stream was useful, why did you want to stop watching so soon?”
Li Shuyun: “I… I couldn’t quite get used to it, Dad.”
Li Zhengshen replied flatly, “Oh, so you were too scared to watch.”
Li Yunhui was still sitting next to his brother this time.
He remained silent as before, listening to his brother and Li Zhengshen talk back and forth.
His brother’s concern was direct and warm, and Li Zhengshen’s words were as annoying as ever.
But unlike every other time he heard Li Zhengshen speak, which made him so annoyed he wanted to storm out, today Li Yunhui rarely found that Li Zhengshen’s words could occasionally drift into his ears.
—Of course, the only ones that could enter his ears were Li Zhengshen’s various answers to his brother’s questions.
The words Li Zhengshen initiated himself were still extremely annoying.
Li Yunhui listened carelessly, the corner of his eye quietly sizing up the man in the video.
The wound on his neck. The bandages on his waist.
The cigarette that was lit but not smoked.
…These were all very rare sights.
In his impression, Li Zhengshen always seemed to have that high-and-mighty, bossy demeanor.
But… looking at him today, it turned out Li Zhengshen was just a man of flesh and blood after all.
Li Yunhui was lost in his own thoughts.
Suddenly, Li Zhengshen’s voice sounded in his ear. “I heard you’ve been behaving well recently, not playing with those extreme sports of yours. Not bad. I’ll give you your living expenses as usual next month.”
Li Yunhui was abruptly brought back to his senses.
A flame of anger shot up from his chest.
But strangely, today the flame failed to become a wildfire, just burning there, warm and small.
Li Yunhui glanced at Li Zhengshen.
If he had heard this before, Li Yunhui would have definitely stormed out and performed a grand three-hundred-and-fifty-kilometer-per-hour racing show for Li Zhengshen. However, today, looking at the layers of bandages on Li Zhengshen’s waist, he rarely had that desire.
And so, he just sneered. “Forget it. Don’t be so full of yourself. Who cares about your living expenses… You can’t even take care of yourself, so stop meddling in my affairs.”
