JOH CH119: The Third First Love
After a brief silent moment, the two of them unconsciously skipped the topic. Dr. Sun cleared his throat and forced out, “Don’t worry. With some more rest, Mr. Gu should… should be able to fully recover soon.”
Su Yiran quietly nodded. “Okay, thank you.”
After this follow-up, learning that Gu Yuanting was recovering well and would soon be fully healed, Su Yiran’s parents finally relaxed. They didn’t stay longer in City A and returned to their hometown two days later.
At the same time, the investigation into the shooting incident had results: the culprit was finally caught, and the mastermind uncovered.
The shooter had no personal grudge against either Gu Yuanting or Su Yiran. He was a desperate mercenary hired overseas to assassinate Gu Yuanting.
The person behind hiring the assassin was none other than Gu Mingfeng, who had faked his death and remained missing all this time.
Gu Yuanting wasn’t surprised. When the shooting happened, he had already guessed the culprit was Gu Mingfeng or someone sent by him.
Before the incident, his people were close to finding Gu Mingfeng’s whereabouts. After waking from unconsciousness, Gu Yuanting immediately ordered his subordinates to secretly cooperate with the police to capture the assassin, while also intensifying efforts to track Gu Mingfeng.
Today, the investigation results finally came in, and they were unexpected.
Gu Mingfeng was already dead.
Following the latest lead, his men found Gu Mingfeng hiding in a shabby clinic in a remote Middle Eastern country. When they found him, Gu Mingfeng had already died alone on the hospital bed, with signs of decomposition. He had been dead for at least 24 hours.
This time, Gu Mingfeng was truly dead—confirmed without doubt. Cause of death: late-stage lung cancer and heart-lung failure.
Gu Yuanting was slightly stunned by the news. It was unexpected but somehow reasonable.
Before faking his death, Gu Mingfeng was already in late-stage lung cancer and wouldn’t live more than half a year. After all the fleeing and hiding, his condition worsened. With his body and Gu Yuanting’s close pursuit and tight defenses, it was impossible for him to personally come back to seek revenge in the country.
Gu Mingfeng hated him, knowing he didn’t have long to live and wanted to take Gu Yuanting down with him. So he escaped the hospital, freed himself from control, and though unable to act personally, he successfully hired a desperate mercenary to assassinate him.
Unfortunately, he failed. Gu Yuanting put down the files in his hands.
He looked at the clouds drifting outside the window and his thoughts wandered to the past life.
In the previous life, Gu Mingfeng also died this way, but ten years later. After losing completely to Gu Yuanting in their struggle, he fled weak and broken. Pursued relentlessly, he was also found dead alone in an abandoned clinic.
It seemed like fate, always leading to the same ending.
“Thinking about what?” Su Yiran pushed open the door carrying a plate of mango pancakes. He saw Ting-ge staring blankly out the window and casually asked as he set the pancakes on the desk.
“Nothing.” Gu Yuanting’s drifting thoughts vanished instantly when he heard Ranran’s voice. Seeing him made his heart sweet and full of warmth and love. He glanced at the mango pancakes and pulled Ranran into his arms to kiss him.
Ranran had made him dessert again.
Su Yiran saw Ting-ge’s eyes sparkling and couldn’t help but smile. He pushed the dessert toward him. “Just made it, try some.”
Gu Yuanting picked up the mango pancakes and ate bite by bite. While eating, he suddenly recalled the time right after his amnesia when Ranran made mango pancakes to cheer him up.
At that time, the amnesiac him even refused at first and had to be coaxed several times before reluctantly agreeing.
Gu Yuanting’s expression turned a bit sour.
So pretentious. Such drama.
Su Yiran was used to Ting-ge’s shifting expressions by now. Recently, Ting-ge’s face changed two or three times daily—randomly triggered by some sudden thought, either silently scolding himself or getting jealous of Su Yiran…
It had been several days of recovery. Ting-ge’s head wound had completely healed. Dr. Sun said his cognition was fully restored with no abnormalities…
Sigh.
Su Yiran silently hugged his silly Ting-ge, kissed his forehead affectionately. He both loved and found amusement in him.
Gu Yuanting was suddenly kissed by Ranran and felt a bubbly warmth inside. Ranran really loved him.
Of course, even during his amnesia, Ranran had still loved him deeply.
Thinking of this, Gu Yuanting felt a little proud, a bit smug, and a little jealous—though he wasn’t sure of what exactly.
Like a lunatic, mentally disconnected.
“…” Gu Yuanting quietly kept eating the mango pancakes.
After finishing the dessert together, Gu Yuanting thought for a moment and told Ranran the news he had just received: “I just got word—Gu Mingfeng is dead. This time, it’s for real.”
Su Yiran was surprised. He had known a few days ago that the shooter was caught and was a mercenary hired by Gu Mingfeng. But he hadn’t expected Gu Mingfeng to die so quickly.
Gu Yuanting briefly explained Gu Mingfeng’s cause of death and the circumstances of his discovery, then stroked Ranran’s hair. “He got what he deserved. Don’t be afraid, Ranran.”
“I’m not afraid.” Su Yiran shook his head and nodded again. “He got what he deserved.”
He hugged Gu Yuanting’s neck, leaned in to kiss Ting-ge, and looked at him seriously. “Ting-ge, don’t be afraid either.”
Gu Yuanting’s heart warmed. He knew Ranran worried that the Gu family matters might affect his emotions.
The two held each other, whispering softly, having long left Gu Mingfeng behind them, no longer concerned. After all, he was just someone insignificant to them.
Now that the Gu family issues and the shooting incident were resolved, the long-standing safety threat was finally lifted. From now on, the three of them—he, Ranran, and their baby—could live peacefully.
Su Yiran and Gu Yuanting’s work had finally returned to normal. During Gu Yuanting’s illness, he rarely went to the company, mostly handling urgent important matters remotely from home. Though many things could be entrusted to subordinates, a large group like Gu’s always had some less important but non-urgent matters that only Gu Yuanting could deal with.
Now, those pending matters piled up. Gu Yuanting had been working steady 8-to-6 days for quite some time, constantly praised by Ranran as both handsome and diligent.
In between, Gu Yuanting went on a business trip to country D, where the Gu headquarters were located. There were still affairs that needed his personal attention. Transferring the headquarters back to City A would take time—not something that could happen overnight.
Whether working at the office or on business abroad, Gu Yuanting missed Ranran deeply.
At those moments, he longed to abandon everything and open a dessert shop with Ranran as originally planned, to be stuck together every day.
Unfortunately, the Gu family situation didn’t allow it. During his injury and unconsciousness, some in the family had made moves. Though he quickly suppressed them, if he gave up everything, there was no guarantee those people wouldn’t rise, and out of hatred or fear, harm him and Ranran.
Gu Yuanting could only bear the longing and sorrow and keep working. He couldn’t call or message Ranran all the time. When he couldn’t bear it, he resorted to knitting and watching the surveillance footage to get by—it was very hard.
The surveillance had been installed by him during the amnesia period—then, that was about the only thing he did well, Gu Yuanting thought.
“Boss?” Hearing “dessert shop,” Zhang Xiaohong called out to Su Yiran with a puzzled tone.
Earlier, Su Yiran had asked her to come over after finishing her work to discuss the new season’s special desserts. But when she arrived, she saw Su Yiran sitting behind the workstation, staring at his watch on his left wrist, seemingly lost in thought.
Just now, Su Yiran had smiled softly at his watch and shook his finger, like greeting someone.
“Oh, you’re here.” Seeing Zhang Xiaohong, Su Yiran quickly covered his watch and greeted her with a smile, then pulled up files on the computer and started discussing business.
Although puzzled and a bit baffled, Zhang Xiaohong quickly ignored it and focused on talking with Su Yiran.
Meanwhile, on the top floor of the Gu building, in the executive office—
Gu Yuanting was watching the surveillance when suddenly his breathing became irregular. He blankly clutched his left chest over his heart, and his breath grew rapid. Joy and a sweet thrill surged together; his heart pounded wildly.
It felt like little deer were running around inside uncontrollably.
It was like experiencing first love with Ranran all over again.
