JOH CH93: Aftermath
Su Yiran finished reading the mental health evaluation form in his hand, steadied his emotions, looked at Dr. Sun, and urgently asked,
“Dr. Sun, what can I do for Ting-ge? How should I cooperate with his treatment?”
Dr. Sun said,
“The most important thing right now is to find the cause of Mr. Gu’s condition. As far as I know, you and Mr. Gu Yuanting have a very good relationship, live a happy life, and your career is going smoothly. You even had a child this year. By all accounts, Mr. Gu shouldn’t be experiencing such severe psychological issues.”
“So, I’d like to know if anything bad happened in Mr. Gu’s past, and what his reactions were at the time—please be as specific as possible.”
Dr. Sun had asked Gu Yuanting this same question earlier, but Gu Yuanting had only given a brief reply and then fell silent, unwilling to elaborate. Knowing that pressing further could touch on psychological trauma, Dr. Sun had chosen not to push.
Su Yiran nodded, beginning to recall. He and Dr. Sun had long since signed a confidentiality agreement, so there was no worry about this personal information leaking—only Dr. Sun, as the psychiatrist, would know.
As he thought, he slowly began telling Dr. Sun everything he knew about Ting-ge’s past.
Meanwhile, Gu Yuanting was waiting on the sofa in the tearoom. As the minutes passed, he frowned. Ranran and Dr. Sun had been talking for too long. In his estimation, once Dr. Sun told Ranran that he was fine, Ranran should have come out soon after.
After waiting a while longer and feeling restless, GuYuanting glanced toward the door, finally stood up, slid open the glass door, and headed to Dr. Sun’s office.
Su Yiran was still explaining Gu Yuanting’s psychological issues. After hearing about Gu Yuanting’s past, Dr. Sun paused for a moment, now understanding better why Mr. Gu had developed his current personality. Just as he was about to continue the discussion, the office door suddenly opened.
Gu Yuanting walked in, saw Dr. Sun talking to Ranran, and frowned.
Hearing movement behind him, Su Yiran turned to see Ting-ge enter. Thinking about everything Dr. Sun had just said, and about Ting-ge’s severe condition, he felt a stab of pain in his heart. Looking at the man who appeared perfectly fine, he stood and softly called,
“Ting-ge…”
He didn’t even dare raise his voice—his tone was so gentle, afraid that speaking too loudly might frighten this crystal-like man.
Seeing Ranran’s pale face and slightly reddened eyes, Gu Yuanting instantly understood. He turned sharply toward Dr. Sun, his gaze like a blade.
Feeling that piercing stare, Dr. Sun realized that Mr. Su really had been fishing for information earlier. Awkwardly shifting his posture, he avoided Gu Yuanting’s eyes.
Su Yiran walked over and gently took Ting-ge’s hand, kissing it in concern. Noticing the way Gu Yuanting looked at Dr. Sun, he patted Gu Yuanting’s hand soothingly and explained,
“Ting-ge, don’t blame Dr. Sun. I told him earlier that you had already confided in me, so he told me the truth.”
Dr. Sun quickly stood and added,
“That’s right, Mr. Gu. I… wait—does that mean you didn’t actually…”
But Gu Yuanting wasn’t listening—his full attention was on Su Yiran. Flustered, he tried to explain,
“Ranran, I didn’t mean to hide it from you, I—”
“It’s okay, Ting-ge.” Su Yiran cut him off with a smile, repeating,
“It’s okay. Don’t worry.”
Once Gu Yuanting calmed down, Su Yiran turned to Dr. Sun,
“Dr. Sun, Ting-ge and I will go to the tearoom to talk for a while, then we’ll come back, okay?”
They had only touched on things briefly so far and hadn’t discussed solutions yet.
Dr. Sun nodded. “Alright.”
Su Yiran led Gu Yuanting back to the tearoom. Gu Yuanting quietly let himself be led, watching Ranran close the door. Lowering his head like a child who had done something wrong, he said,
“I…”
“You didn’t do anything wrong,” Su Yiran said softly, guiding Gu Yuanting to the sofa. He was treating him like fragile glass now, holding him close and caressing his face.
“I know you only hid it because you love me and didn’t want me to worry.”
Feeling Ranran’s tolerance and tenderness, Gu Yuanting relaxed for a moment—but then tensed again. If he slipped up and Ranran discovered he wasn’t the original…
Su Yiran continued,
“But you don’t need to carry everything alone. We’re lovers—I want to face difficulties with you. Especially when it comes to psychological problems, tell me. Let me help you. We share the burden, we work together, and you’ll get better faster, okay?”
After a pause, Gu Yuanting nodded. “Okay.”
They chatted for a bit, but Su Yiran noticed that Ting-ge remained quiet and low in spirit, though he agreed to everything Su said without objection.
Knowing it was best not to rush, Su decided to avoid pressing on mental health for now. Instead, they cuddled and chatted about daily life. He smiled,
“Want some fruit? There’s apple and snow pear here.”
Gu Yuanting shook his head. “No need. Do you want some? I’ll cut you an apple.” He reached for one.
Su Yiran quickly snatched it first, waving it playfully.
“Got it first. I’ll cut it—you get half, I get half.”
Seeing his smile, Gu’s lips curved as well. “Okay.”
Su washed the apple, peeled it, cut it in half, and gave one piece to Gu. They ate together, and when they were done, Su checked the time.
“Shall we go see Dr. Sun?”
Gu’s expression darkened at the mention.
Su ruffled his hair with a helpless smile.
“Don’t think about giving Dr. Sun a hard time. He didn’t mean any harm—he’s helping you recover, and he’s a good doctor.”
Gu Yuanting knew this. Hearing Ranran say it again, he nodded.
Back in Dr. Sun’s office, seeing that they had obviously reconciled, Dr. Sun relaxed and continued the session.
Over an hour later, the initial consultation ended. Dr. Sun prescribed some supporting medication, reminded them of key precautions, and set the next appointment for further examination and treatment.
As they left the hospital and headed to the parking lot, Gu Yuanting received a call. Seeing the caller ID, he frowned, motioned for Ranran to get in the car first, and stepped aside to answer.
“What is it?”
“Boss Gu…” His subordinate’s voice was tense. “Gu Mingfeng’s body is gone…”
Gu Yuanting immediately went on high alert. “What happened?”
“Just now, the morgue attendant at the hospital took a nap in the duty room. When he woke, Gu Mingfeng’s body was gone. The surveillance cameras had been sabotaged. No sign of the body being moved.”
Gu’s brows furrowed deeply. After confirming Mingfeng’s death, he had relaxed security, thinking only about funeral preparations. He hadn’t expected this.
He thought quickly—Mingfeng’s sudden death had been suspicious from the start. His illness was real—late-stage lung cancer, less than six months to live—but it hadn’t yet reached the critical point where he could die suddenly.
Had Mingfeng faked his death to escape and launch one final, desperate strike?
Given his hatred, it was entirely possible—people near death could become the most reckless.
Gu Yuanting ordered,
“Search for him at full strength—dead or alive. He may not be dead.”
His subordinate paused in shock, then quickly agreed.
After hanging up, Gu Yuanting made several more calls—to search for Mingfeng and to strengthen defenses in City A, protecting Ranran and the family.
Only then did he put his phone away, glancing toward the car where Ranran waited, and took a deep breath.
Over the next two months, the search for Mingfeng never stopped. But it was as if he had vanished without a trace—every lead went cold.
This only confirmed Gu’s suspicion: hiding a corpse so cleanly was impossible—Mingfeng was alive.
Still, no unusual incidents occurred in City A, and neither Gu Yuanting nor Ranran seemed to be in immediate danger. The home, shop, and company remained normal.
Gu Yuanting further strengthened the security net around City A and ordered his men to keep searching while he waited patiently.
At first, Su Yiran knew nothing—Gu Yuanting didn’t want him to worry about such a dangerous and troubling matter.
But within a few days, Su noticed that Gu Yuanting was busier than usual. Ever since learning about Gu’s mental health issues, he had been watching him closely, so he quickly picked up on the change.
After some questioning and heartfelt discussion, Gu Yuanting told him the truth, assuring him that their security was airtight.
Su observed for a few days and saw no suspicious signs. He relaxed somewhat but kept his guard up.
The Mingfeng matter only heightened their alertness and strengthened Gu’s protective measures in the shadows. Their daily life otherwise continued as normal.
During these two months, Gu’s psychological treatment continued. Every Wednesday, Su accompanied him to the hospital for follow-ups with Dr. Sun.
Gu Yuanting cooperated well, and Su devoted most of his time to him—rarely managing the shop, live streaming only twice a week, and even reducing his time with the baby. Fortunately, the baby was still young and slept most of the day, with Su’s mother and the nanny helping.
Su focused on keeping Ting-ge company—talking, relaxing, showing affection, or simply being together.
At first, Gu’s condition did seem to improve, especially during the first month—he clearly enjoyed having all of Ranran’s attention.
But as treatment progressed, Su began to worry—the outlook wasn’t as optimistic as he had hoped.
