PRYM CH136: Comforting
Was this IV needle more painful than a regular one?
Li Yunhui wasn’t sure, but he was extremely worried, always afraid his brother wouldn’t be able to bear the pain.
So he insisted on covering his brother’s eyes with one hand, while his other hand tightly wrapped around his brother’s left fist, trying hard to comfort him. “Don’t think about it, Shuyun. Just think of it as a mosquito bite. It doesn’t hurt, it doesn’t hurt. Brother is here.”
Who would have thought that Li Shuyun would laugh at these words?
Li Shuyun said softly, “Brother, I’m not a child anymore. I won’t be afraid of getting a shot.”
Li Yunhui also felt that maybe he was worrying too much.
But no matter how he looked, he just felt that his brother’s hand was so thin, white, and weak, it would definitely hurt to be pierced by a needle!
Li Yunhui: “Yes, yes, Shuyun is not afraid. Don’t think about it, don’t move your hand, it will be over soon… Hey, Shuyun is so brave! Okay, you can look now, remember not to move your hand!”
It wasn’t until the doctor had completely finished that Li Yunhui finally moved his hand from his brother’s eyes.
His brother’s eyes held a gentle smile. As soon as his hand was moved, his brother’s eyes curved at him. “Thank you, brother.”
His brother’s smile silently and softly brushed against the tip of his heart, making his heart so soft and warm that for a moment he didn’t want to leave his brother’s bedside.
Fortunately, Li Yunhui still had some sense and hadn’t forgotten what he needed to do.
He spent about half an hour coaxing his brother to sleep, then had the butler come to the bedside to watch over him.
He himself quietly left the ward and went out to call Li Zhengshen.
The butler had already reported the matter to Li Zhengshen when the incident occurred.
When the call was made, Li Zhengshen answered not long after, as if he had already cleared his evening and was waiting for his call.
Unfortunately, Li Yunhui didn’t have the extra energy to think about Li Zhengshen’s quick answer at this time.
After hearing Li Zhengshen’s voice, Li Yunhui went straight to the point and asked, “Do you have any good medical resources or connections? Shuyun’s condition is difficult to treat in the country. Perhaps there’s a way abroad.”
Li Zhengshen’s voice was steady. “I have some. I’ll have them contact you tomorrow morning.”
Li Zhengshen’s answer was also straight to the point, concise and powerful.
So much so that for the first time, Li Yunhui felt his mood lift upon hearing Li Zhengshen’s voice.
The anxiety that had lasted all evening seemed to be soothed and reassured by this one word, “have.”
But that was to be expected.
Shuyun was Li Zhengshen’s biological son, after all!
With his mood suddenly relieved a little, the anxiety and unease that Li Yunhui had accumulated all day desperately wanted to be released at this moment.
He couldn’t show any of these emotions to his brother.
With Cheng Huanzhen and the butler, it wasn’t appropriate to talk about such deep emotional topics.
So much so that after some comparison, Li Zhengshen seemed to have become a good choice for emotional release.
The unusual silence caught Li Zhengshen’s attention. “Yunhui?”
Li Yunhui: “…”
Li Yunhui asked stiffly, “How come your voice doesn’t sound sad at all?”
Li Zhengshen: “?”
Li Yunhui was silent for a moment, his voice becoming a little low. “Didn’t Uncle Zhao tell you about Shuyun’s examination results? Do you know, during the day, Shuyun just told me…”
Once he started, Li Yunhui could no longer hold back his emotions.
He started from his brother’s touching vision and dreams for the project during the day, talked about the accident on the stairs, and then how he took his brother to the hospital, and after the examination, every word the doctor said to him…
Li Yunhui seemed to have finally found a place to confide, and told the whole story from beginning to end.
The more Li Yunhui spoke, the more pained he became. His five fingers even grabbed his hair, trying to calm himself down by pulling on his scalp. “…But this is clearly not something his age should bear!”
“Shuyun is not even twenty years old. He just started university, he’s still exploring the starting point of his career, he still has so many things he wants to do. He just came back to the country, just came back to my side!”
“Li Zhengshen, you tell me, how could Shuyun get cancer at this time?”
“You don’t know how much pain Shuyun was in today. It was the first time I saw Shuyun in such a state. I’m his brother, but at that time, I couldn’t do anything!”
Li Zhengshen had been listening to him quietly from beginning to end, uncharacteristically not making any casual remarks that would set him off.
Only at the end, when his emotions were clearly agitated, did he suddenly say, “I heard from Little Zhao today. You did well.”
Li Yunhui’s emotions paused. “What?”
Li Zhengshen said, “You can’t interfere with his illness. What you can do is just make sure you don’t have regrets in the future. Staying with him, soothing his emotions, this is a very good approach.”
Li Zhengshen’s voice was a little lower than usual. He said, “I will do my best to contact doctors for Shuyun. You don’t have to worry too much. Just stay with Shuyun in the hospital.”
Li Yunhui pressed his lips together tightly and didn’t say a word.
He stood in the hospital corridor. It was silent all around, and the air smelled of disinfectant. The two combined were enough to make him so agitated that he wanted to go home on the spot.
At this moment, the familiar voice in his ear was able to calm his heart a little.
Li Zhengshen wasn’t very good at comforting people.
After speaking, Li Zhengshen was silent with him for nearly half a minute, then suddenly began to stiffly talk about the stories of his many friends—of course, he was referring to those friends who had lost their lives for various reasons.
Li Yunhui thought, Li Zhengshen was really bad at telling stories.
At a time like this, he should be telling him stories of late-stage cancer patients who successfully overcame their illness to boost his confidence.
Who would be like Li Zhengshen, who started by telling him stories of his deceased friends, to teach him how to adjust his mood when someone around him passed away!
The more Li Yunhui listened, the angrier he became.
It was just that Li Zhengshen’s clumsy, stiff, yet very hard-working manner made him unable to vent his temper.
But after holding it in for a while, Li Yunhui finally couldn’t help but interrupt Li Zhengshen’s story.
Li Yunhui said viciously, “…Stop! It’s not like there’s no hope for Shuyun now. Don’t undermine my confidence here!”
He simply ended the topic, saying, “Forget it. You hurry up and contact the doctors. It’s best to have them all contact me tomorrow morning. Let them meet early, communicate early, and finalize the final plan early. The sooner Shuyun’s treatment starts, the better!”
The call ended just like that.
Li Yunhui stood fixedly in the hospital corridor, and suddenly realized a problem: When did he and Li Zhengshen start being able to talk so normally?
Li Yunhui recalled for two seconds in a daze.
His relationship with Li Zhengshen had always been very distant, and could even be considered “not good” at one point.
But ever since Shuyun returned home, for some strange reason, his relationship with Li Zhengshen had eased a lot.
He and Li Zhengshen would no longer start with sarcastic remarks or even arguments at the mention of each other’s names; when he listened to Li Zhengshen speak, he would no longer get angry at the sound of his voice; they could even be on the same side on some issues—for example, not letting Shuyun play extreme sports, not letting Shuyun go abroad to find Li Zhengshen.
And today.
They were even able to have such a normal… family-like conversation.
The more Li Yunhui thought about it, the more his mood sank.
That’s right. With Shuyun around, it didn’t seem surprising that such a change would occur.
But… Shuyun, Shuyun, his Shuyun was the one who should have received the greatest love in the world!
Li Yunhui returned to the ward amidst his melancholy and low spirits.
He had promised Shuyun.
However long Shuyun stayed in the hospital, he would stay with him.
The main light in the ward had been turned off, leaving only a small table lamp in the corner, so that the entire ward would not be plunged into complete darkness.
The butler and two bodyguards were guarding here.
They would take turns guarding his brother around the clock.
Li Yunhui tiptoed to his brother’s bed, bent down, and carefully tucked him in.
His brother seemed to be sleeping peacefully, his brows relaxed and gentle, his soft hair had been tidied by someone, neatly falling by his ears, his gentle face quiet and well-behaved, just like every other night.
Li Yunhui observed for a long while before he was finally relieved.
He gave a few instructions in a whisper to the bodyguard on duty that night, then returned to the room next door.
The night passed in a flash.
The next morning, Li Yunhui got up from bed early.
He had suffered from insomnia last night and had probably only fallen asleep around sunrise. He had only slept for an hour or two when he woke up.
But his phone rang.
A look, and it was indeed a message from Li Zhengshen—Li Zhengshen had very efficiently contacted cancer experts from several countries for him!
Li Yunhui didn’t want to delay for a moment. He simply got up and held a meeting with the team of experts and the hospital doctors early in the morning, trying to discuss an optimal treatment plan.
Li Yunhui didn’t want his brother to know about his own illness.
Shuyun had never been very brave. He was worried that his brother would be frightened by the cancer, which would affect his mood and even make him want to give up.
However, no matter what the treatment plan was, it would ultimately be carried out on Li Shuyun.
When a series of classic cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation therapy were applied to his brother, his brother inevitably had his suspicions about his condition.
Li Shuyun, confused and flustered, grabbed the corner of his brother’s clothes. “Brother, I… do I have cancer?”
He tried hard to remain calm, but his voice trembled uncontrollably.
Li Shuyun: “Brother, why aren’t you talking? Why didn’t you tell me? Is my condition very serious? Am I… not going to live for long?”
Li Yunhui’s face changed abruptly, and he immediately scolded his brother. “What are you talking about? Don’t talk nonsense!”
As soon as the words were out, he immediately regretted them.
Seeing his brother’s frightened look, Li Yunhui immediately softened his expression, held his brother’s hands tightly, and stroked his brother’s head comfortingly.
He softened his voice and said to his brother, “I didn’t tell you because I was afraid you would worry unnecessarily. But since you’ve guessed, brother won’t hide it from you—it is cancer, but it’s not serious. You see, I’ve been discussing your treatment plan with the doctors these past few days.”
“The doctor said your chances of recovery are very high. As long as you cooperate and complete all the treatments, there will definitely be no problem!”
Li Yunhui said with great certainty, as if all of this were true.
Li Shuyun stared at his brother, seemingly moved by his confident tone.
Li Shuyun: “Really, brother? …Can I get better? As long as I get proper treatment, can our lives go back to the way they were before?”
Li Yunhui, despite the fatigue of several sleepless nights, showed his brother a firm and spirited smile and said, “Of course, Shuyun. When has brother ever lied to you?”
