JOH CH69: Recovery
Su Yiran lay in the hospital bed, chatting with his parents, and seeing Ting-ge return, he asked him, “Did you eat well?”
Gu Yuanting nodded, pretending he had eaten. He was afraid Ranran was hungry and quickly reassured him, “Don’t worry, Ranran, you’ll be able to eat soon.”
Su Yiran smiled at him, “It’s fine, I’m not hungry anyway.”
The few of them chatted for a while. Around 8 PM, Aunt Qian, the postpartum nanny they had hired in advance, arrived. Gu Yuanting had hired two postpartum nannies; the other one would arrive the next day.
Mother Su initially felt that there was no need to hire a postpartum nanny, that she and Father Su were enough. However, since Gu Yuanting had already hired them in advance, she didn’t object, just thought so inwardly.
But as soon as she chatted with Aunt Qian for a few minutes, she discovered that Aunt Qian knew a lot. After spending some time together, she also found that Aunt Qian was excellent at taking care of Su Yiran and the baby, and even taught her many details that Mother Su had never known before. It seemed hiring a postpartum nanny was indeed very necessary.
Gu Yuanting saw that it was getting late and said to Father Su and Mother Su, “Dad, Mom, you’ve both had a tiring day. Go back and rest. I’m here, and Auntie is also taking care of things.”
Father Su and Mother Su, seeing that there was nothing urgent here for now, agreed and returned to the adjacent family room.
Gu Yuanting stayed by Ranran’s side and, seeing the fatigued look on Ranran’s face, immediately urged him to rest. Su Yiran, however, shook his head, looking eagerly at the baby in the bassinet: “I want to look at the baby a little longer.”
Gu Yuanting: “…”
Gu Yuanting took a deep breath again, looked at the baby over there, then finally went over and picked up the baby. He gently placed the baby next to Su Yiran: “Just touch him a little more, then go to sleep, okay?”
Su Yiran nodded eagerly, momentarily forgetting to talk to Ting-ge. He carefully touched the baby’s little face, then looked at the baby, and his lips curved into a smile.
Just then, as if sensing something, the baby suddenly moved, woke up, and then opened its eyes. They were a pair of clear, pure large eyes, filled with curiosity about this world, innocently blinking, radiating light.
Su Yiran’s heart melted. He excitedly looked at Gu Yuanting, then back at the baby: “Ting-ge, look, the baby’s eyes are open! He’s so cute!” His eyes were filled with tenderness and love.
Gu Yuanting saw it too. He looked at the adorable little baby, then at Ranran. The two little angels melted his heart as well, making him feel incredibly soft and mushy inside.
He couldn’t help but gently stroke Ranran’s head: “He is very cute, just like you.”
Su Yiran’s face flushed at Ting-ge’s words, and his heart felt soft again.
But soon, he couldn’t think of anything else because the baby suddenly started crying, kicking its little legs and crying loudly. Aunt Qian quickly came over and, with a touch, said, “He peed.”
Aunt Qian skillfully changed the baby’s diaper, and the baby indeed stopped crying. As Aunt Qian changed him, she taught Gu Yuanting and Su Yiran, explaining things to them.
After the change, Aunt Qian went to make formula and fed the baby milk, also teaching Gu Yuanting how to burp the baby.
Gu Yuanting watched and listened intently, silently learning and committing everything to memory.
When they were done, the baby had finished his milk, smacked his lips adorably, and soon fell asleep again. Peace returned to the room.
Aunt Qian saw that the two employers were going to rest, so she carried the sleeping baby back to the bassinet, then drew the curtain around the hospital bed, and settled down on the accompanying bed next to the bassinet to stay overnight.
With the curtain drawn, the relatively enclosed environment gave Su Yiran and Gu Yuanting their private space.
Su Yiran lay on the bed, looking at Ting-ge, and his heart couldn’t help but stir. A strange, swelling emotion suddenly welled up inside him, and he couldn’t help but gently call out, “Ting-ge…”
“I’m here.” Gu Yuanting held Ranran’s hand and kissed it. His heart also felt a similar bittersweet swelling. He couldn’t help but lean down and kiss Ranran’s lips, with tenderness and love, “Ranran, I’m here.”
Su Yiran, enveloped by Ting-ge’s love, quickly felt the strange emotion in his heart disappear, transforming into a feeling of being touched. He couldn’t help but respond to Ting-ge’s kisses, feeling very happy.
The two gently and tenderly kissed for a while. Gu Yuanting then kissed Ranran’s cheeks, nose, forehead, eyes, and lips in tiny, lingering pecks. Finally, he stroked Ranran’s little face: “It’s late, you should rest now. Go to sleep?”
Su Yiran couldn’t help but rub his face against Ting-ge’s palm, nodding obediently: “Mm, you sleep too.”
Gu Yuanting, seeing Ranran close his eyes, turned off the light and lay down on the accompanying bed next to him. These past few days, fearing he might touch Ranran’s wound while sleeping, he couldn’t share the bed with Ranran as he used to.
He lay on his side, watching the sleeping Ranran in the dark, his heart alternating between softness and bitterness, making it difficult to fall asleep.
During the night, Su Yiran was woken up by the baby.
The little infant would cry and wake up approximately every two hours, needing to be fed. Fortunately, Aunt Qian was there to take care of him. The baby would cry for a bit, then stop once fed.
Gu Yuanting was also there, helping to care for the baby. As soon as Su Yiran woke up, he noticed, quickly went over to touch and comfort him, gently coaxing him back to sleep. Su Yiran, no longer hearing the crying, felt relieved and groggily drifted back to sleep.
The night passed, and Su Yiran was only woken up twice. The next morning, when he woke up, he felt quite energetic, but…
Su Yiran felt a little embarrassed calling Gu Yuanting: “Ting-ge…”
Gu Yuanting hadn’t slept much all night and was already awake, guarding Ranran’s side. Seeing him wake up and call him, he quickly asked, “What’s wrong? Are you hungry?”
Su Yiran’s face flushed: “No… I need to use the restroom.”
Gu Yuanting understood, bent down to retrieve the urinal from under the bed, helped Ranran position himself, and seeing Ranran was still a bit shy and couldn’t urinate for a while, he even quietly whistled.
Su Yiran: “…”
Finally finished, Su Yiran’s face was completely red, like a tomato. Although Ting-ge often helped him in the bathroom at home before, this was in a hospital room, different from home, and he couldn’t help but feel both shy and awkward.
Gu Yuanting helped him clean up and dealt with the urinal. Su Yiran only relaxed a little when he saw Ting-ge’s normal expression.
After Gu Yuanting finished tidying up, he carefully helped Su Yiran turn over and move his legs, then asked him, “How do you feel? Want to sleep a little more?” Ranran had woken up twice last night and might not have slept well.
Su Yiran said, “I’m not sleepy.” He looked towards the curtain: “Is the baby still asleep?”
Gu Yuanting, seeing he was still energetic, didn’t insist. He pulled back the curtain: “He woke up half an hour ago, but now he’s asleep again.”
He saw Ranran looking longingly and knew he wanted the baby as soon as he woke up. He felt a pang of jealousy for a moment, then realized he was being childish, getting jealous of a little baby.
Gu Yuanting maturely picked up the baby and placed him next to Su Yiran, maturely allowing Ranran close contact with the baby.
Indeed, as soon as Su Yiran saw the baby, his eyes lit up with a smile, and he stared at the baby intently, unable to tear his gaze away.
Gu Yuanting: “…”
The movement of the baby being picked up woke Aunt Qian. Seeing that both her employers were awake, she got up to attend to them. Soon after, Father Su and Mother Su also arrived. By around 9 AM, the other postpartum nanny also came.
Suddenly, five people were simultaneously attending to Su Yiran and the baby, and with the hospital’s caregivers, there were even more people.
The two postpartum nannies also eased the burden on Father Su and Mother Su significantly. However, Gu Yuanting, while learning from the nannies, still insisted on personally handling Su Yiran’s care as much as possible.
It hadn’t been 24 hours yet, so Su Yiran still couldn’t eat. Gu Yuanting’s heart ached for Ranran being hungry, and he himself had no appetite, saying he was full after just a little porridge.
Finally, by afternoon, Su Yiran could finally have some liquid food. Mother Su had already prepared fragrant, thin rice porridge in advance, good for the spleen and stomach. Gu Yuanting carefully fed Ranran spoonful by spoonful until he finished, then breathed a sigh of relief.
For the next two days, Su Yiran could only have liquid foods like thin porridge, fish soup, and egg drop soup. Only on the third day could he have semi-liquid foods like thicker porridge, noodle soup, and wontons. He also couldn’t eat too much at once, only small, frequent meals, so Su Yiran ate six or seven times a day.
On the third day, Su Yiran could finally wash his hair. Gu Yuanting washed his hair for him and then gently helped him blow-dry it.
For these two days, Gu Yuanting had been helping him with his personal hygiene, washing his face, brushing his teeth, cleaning sweat, and changing his clothes daily.
After changing his clothes, Gu Yuanting fed him noodle soup, then carefully helped Ranran sit up, wrapped an abdominal binder around his waist to protect the wound, and then helped him get out of bed to begin his daily physical activity.
Getting out of bed was very difficult. At first, Su Yiran, under the guidance of the postpartum nanny, slowly moved his limbs in bed. Then, with Ting-ge’s support, he would stand up. It was only yesterday that he could finally move around a small area on his feet with Gu Yuanting’s assistance.
Gu Yuanting supported Ranran tenderly, moving slowly. Su Yiran’s body was still somewhat weak, and after walking slowly for over ten minutes, he broke out in a sweat.
Seeing this, Gu Yuanting carefully helped him sit back on the bed. He first loosened the abdominal binder, preparing to wipe him down and change his clothes. He first adjusted the air conditioner to 28 degrees Celsius, then checked the angle of the air conditioner’s fan blades to ensure the air wouldn’t blow directly on Ranran, before he started undressing him.
Although it was summer, it was still important to stay warm. If he sweated, he had to change clothes, otherwise, he could easily catch a cold and get sick, and a cold and cough would pull at his wound.
Gu Yuanting helped Su Yiran change his clothes, then asked him, “Thirsty?”
Su Yiran needed to drink a lot of water now. Gu Yuanting saw Ranran nod and quickly poured a glass of warm water to feed him. After he finished, he helped him lie down to rest.
In the afternoon, Dr. Chen came to the ward to examine Su Yiran’s incision and change the dressing. Gu Yuanting watched nervously from the side. Even though the incision was healing well, seeing the wound still made his heart and body ache, causing him immense distress.
Su Yiran noticed Ting-ge’s expression, and his heart stirred. He had already noticed that Ting-ge’s state these past two days was not right.
Waking up these two days, he could see dark circles under Ting-ge’s eyes. It was normal not to sleep well since the baby cried at night, but Ting-ge also ate little at each meal, seeming to have a poor appetite. Seeing Ting-ge’s expression now, Su Yiran couldn’t help but make a guess.
