Gu Yuanting took a deep breath, stepped forward, and picked up the baby. He gently said to Su Yiran, “Ranran, be good. You need to rest now. Close your eyes and recover your energy quickly.”

As he spoke, he intended to put the baby back in the bassinet. Unexpectedly, just as he was about to put the baby down, the baby suddenly moved in his arms and then cried out “Waa!”

Su Yiran had been looking longingly as Ting-ge took the baby away, but he had obediently said nothing. Now, seeing the baby cry, he immediately grew anxious and asked, “What’s wrong? What’s wrong?”

Gu Yuanting stood frozen, holding the wailing baby in his arms. The baby cried incredibly loudly, its tiny hands and feet wiggling in his embrace. He held the little baby helplessly, completely dumbfounded.

“Oh, Tingting, you’re holding him wrong!” Mama Su quickly came over, took the baby from Gu Yuanting’s arms, and chided, “You woke the baby up.”

Mama Su held the baby and patted it, then touched its bottom. Seeing that the diaper wasn’t wet, she breathed a sigh of relief and called Papa Su: “Quick, make some formula for the baby; he must be hungry.”

Before Papa Su could move, Gu Yuanting quickly went to make formula for the baby, clumsily spilling some powder on the table.

Finally, after preparing the milk, Mama Su took the bottle from him and put it to the baby’s mouth. As soon as the baby touched the nipple, it indeed stopped crying, sucking vigorously and quietly drinking the milk.

Su Yiran felt relieved and then saw Ting-ge standing foolishly next to the baby, unable to help but smile slightly.

After the baby finished drinking milk, Mama Su began to demonstrate to Gu Yuanting and Su Yiran how to hold the baby correctly. She then taught Gu Yuanting, “The way you were holding him just now was wrong; it will make the baby uncomfortable.” As she spoke, she gestured for Gu Yuanting to take the baby, “Here, you try.”

Gu Yuanting carefully looked at the little baby, cautiously reached out to take the baby from Mama Su’s arms, held the baby in the position Mama Su had just demonstrated, and then stood stiffly, not daring to move.

This time, the baby neither cried nor fussed, nor did it move around. It lay obediently in its daddy’s arms, its tiny hands charmingly curled up.

Mama Su couldn’t help but smile, praising Gu Yuanting: “Yes, yes, that’s it. Tingting has such good comprehension. No need to be nervous, you can relax a bit. This is the correct way to hold him.”

Seeing that Gu Yuanting couldn’t relax immediately, she took the baby from Gu Yuanting’s arms and said with a smile, “Take your time, everyone goes through this. You’ll get the hang of it after holding him for a few days.”

She then looked down at the baby and couldn’t help but kiss it, “But, my sweet grandchild is truly an angel baby; he doesn’t fuss at all.”

Papa Su nodded, smiling in agreement: “Indeed,” he then thought of something and asked Gu Yuanting and Su Yiran, “Oh, right, have you chosen a name for the baby?”

Gu Yuanting nodded, looking gently at Su Yiran: “His name is Su Guheng.”

Papa Su paused: “Su surname?” He then looked at Su Yiran for confirmation.

Su Yiran nodded. He didn’t care if the baby’s surname was Su or Gu, as there was no difference anyway. When they were choosing a name, Ting-ge told him he wanted the baby to have the Su surname, and after thinking about it, he agreed.

Upon receiving Su Yiran’s confirmation, Papa Su and Mama Su exchanged glances. They also felt that either Su or Gu surname for the baby was fine; after all, he was their sweet grandchild. Since the young couple had already discussed it, they would let them decide. However…

Mama Su asked Gu Yuanting with hesitation: “And the in-laws…?”

After learning Gu Yuanting’s true family background, they had all assumed that a wealthy and prominent family like the Gu family would place more importance on surnames and would want the baby to have the Gu surname, which was why both of them had paused just now.

Gu Yuanting looked down at the baby, gently stroking the baby’s little face. He explained, “They have no requirements in this regard, whatever makes us happy.” He then looked at Ranran and smiled at him, “The surname Su for the baby sounds very nice.”

He liked the baby to have Ranran’s surname.

Not only because the baby was first Ranran’s child and then his.

But also because he loved Ranran.

If a surname needed to be inherited, even if it wasn’t important to Ranran, he hoped the baby would inherit Ranran’s, so that Ranran’s bloodline and surname could, in another way, continue to exist in this world after their passing.

Papa Su and Mama Su felt relieved hearing Gu Yuanting say this. It seemed their in-laws were easy to get along with, and like them, they were happy to let the young couple decide.

Papa Su recited the baby’s name a couple of times: “Su Guheng, Su Guheng.”

He looked deeply at Gu Yuanting and nodded, “Heng, eternal, perseverance. It’s a good name.”

Mama Su then asked, “Has the baby got a nickname? What is it?”

Su Yiran said with a smile, “Just Baby.”

Mama Su paused for a moment, looked at the baby in her arms, wondering if that nickname was a bit too casual? However, she thought about it again, nodded: “Baby, that’s pretty good too.” She kissed the baby’s face, “Grandma’s precious darling.”

After all this commotion, Gu Yuanting saw that Ranran still hadn’t rested and quickly said, “Ranran, rest first, okay?”

Su Yiran genuinely felt a bit tired. He nodded, closed his eyes, and although he couldn’t immediately fall asleep, he rested with his eyes closed.

The room quieted down. The baby also fell asleep in Mama Su’s arms. Mama Su gently placed him in the bassinet. She gestured to Papa Su and Gu Yuanting, and they all walked together to the bedroom door.

Mama Su quietly told Gu Yuanting, “I’m going to the market to buy some vegetables, and I’ll pick up some dried tangerine peel while I’m at it. I’ll come back and make some tangerine peel water for Ranran. You two watch over him here.”

Both nodded in agreement. Gu Yuanting sincerely said, “Thank you for your trouble, Mom.”

Mama Su smiled and waved her hand at him, then left.

Su Yiran closed his eyes to rest, and as he rested, he unknowingly fell asleep.

Gu Yuanting stayed by his side the entire time. As time passed, he began to feel nervous. He knew the anesthesia was about to wear off, and Ranran would start to feel pain.

Time ticked by, minute by minute. In his sleep, Su Yiran suddenly felt a sharp pain in his abdomen, which almost immediately woke him up.

Gu Yuanting saw Ranran suddenly wake up, his brows tightly furrowed, his small face pale, sweat beading on his forehead, and a low, painful moan escaping him. He immediately stood up, frantically leaning over to touch Su Yiran’s face: “Does it hurt?”

Papa Su, seeing the situation, also quickly came over to ask worriedly.

Su Yiran’s face was ashen. He was in too much pain to speak, only able to nod slightly.

Gu Yuanting’s heart ached terribly, and he himself felt intense pain. He frantically said, “Don’t be afraid, Ranran, I’ll call the doctor.” As he spoke, he told Papa Su to watch over Ranran and ran out like a whirlwind.

Gu Yuanting quickly found the doctor, pulling him upstairs: “The anesthesia has worn off, quickly get him a pain pump!”

The doctor, seeing Gu Yuanting’s anxious and frantic expression, was also made nervous by his demeanor. He thought Su Yiran was in unbearable pain, quickly grabbed his things, and rushed to the ward with Gu Yuanting.

Gu Yuanting saw Ranran lying pitifully on the hospital bed, tears already welling up in his eyes from the pain, his long eyelashes wet with tears, and his heart felt like it had been stabbed.

Gu Yuanting’s eyes were red-rimmed. He frantically held Ranran’s hand, comforting him: “Don’t be afraid, Ranran, the doctor is here. The pain will stop soon.”

The doctor, seeing that Su Yiran’s reaction wasn’t too severe yet, breathed a sigh of relief. He began to systematically set up the pain pump for Su Yiran. However, looking at President Gu, he couldn’t help but inwardly marvel that President Gu truly had deep love for Mr. Su.

As soon as the pain pump was connected, Su Yiran immediately felt the pain greatly relieved, almost completely gone. He relaxed and gave Ting-ge a reassuring smile: “Ting-ge, I don’t hurt anymore.”

Gu Yuanting saw Ranran’s previously tightly furrowed brows relax and his body unwind. Only then did he feel a slight relief. He and Papa Su thanked the doctor and saw him out.

Gu Yuanting returned to sit beside Su Yiran, gently touching Ranran’s still damp hair on his forehead. His heart began to ache again. He picked up Ranran’s hand and kissed it: “Still sleepy? Want to sleep a little more?”

Su Yiran shook his head: “I slept well just now, I’m not sleepy anymore.” He looked around, didn’t see Mama Su, and couldn’t help but ask, “Where’s Mom?”

Gu Yuanting said, “She’s in the room next door, making you some tangerine peel water.” In Papa Su and Mama Su’s accompanying family room, all facilities were fully equipped. After Mama Su returned from buying groceries, she would cook and boil water in the kitchen of their room.

Indeed, after a while, Mama Su came over with a small soup bowl. Seeing Su Yiran awake, she immediately noticed the pain pump connected to the IV and quickly asked, “Did the anesthesia wear off?”

Su Yiran nodded: “I’m on the pain pump now, so it doesn’t hurt.”

Mama Su breathed a sigh of relief: “That’s good. Here, have some tangerine peel water; it helps with passing gas.”

Gu Yuanting took the small soup bowl from Mama Su’s hand, scooped a spoonful, and touched it to his lips to test the temperature. Feeling the temperature was right, he fed Ranran spoonful by spoonful.

Su Yiran couldn’t eat solid food yet; he had to wait until he passed gas before he could eat semi-liquid, easily digestible foods. For now, he could only drink some soup that promoted passing gas.

Papa Su and Mama Su looked at Gu Yuanting feeding Ranran so meticulously and couldn’t help but exchange smiles. Seeing the young couple’s good relationship made them happier than anything.

Su Yiran obediently drank all the tangerine peel water, mouthful by mouthful. It was already dinner time, but fortunately, he wasn’t hungry, otherwise, it would have been uncomfortable to be hungry.

Mama Su saw Su Yiran finish his water and told Gu Yuanting and Papa Su, “Why don’t you two go eat next door? I’ve already made dinner; the dishes are in the pots in the kitchen. I’ll stay here and watch Ranran, and I’ll eat after you two are done.”

Gu Yuanting felt distressed that Ranran couldn’t eat, only drink water. He said to Papa Su and Mama Su, “Dad, Mom, you two go eat first. I’ll stay here and watch Ranran.”

Mama Su thought it was all the same and went to eat with Papa Su first. After finishing their meal, she called Gu Yuanting again: “Tingting, you go eat.”

Gu Yuanting shook his head: “I’m not hungry; I won’t eat.”

Papa Su and Mama Su were about to persuade him when Su Yiran spoke up: “Ting-ge, please eat something, even a little? You must be tired today.”

Ting-ge had been with him all day, and also finding doctors, nurses, and handling procedures. How could he not be hungry after such a tiring day?

He probably understood why Ting-ge didn’t want to eat. He smiled at Gu Yuanting, “Don’t worry about me. I’m really not hungry; it’s fine.”

Gu Yuanting, seeing Ranran about to continue persuading him, and fearing he would worry, quickly said, “Okay, I’ll go eat something.” He then stroked Ranran’s little face. Seeing that Papa Su and Mama Su were both there and nothing could go wrong, he left, looking back three times as he went.

He went to the next room. Indeed, there were three dishes on the dining table, covered with plates to keep them warm.

Gu Yuanting served himself a bowl of rice, then lifted the lids from the dishes. The fragrant smell of stir-fried vegetables immediately wafted out. They were simple, quick home-cooked dishes: stir-fried potato slices with meat, green peppers and eggs, and stir-fried lettuce. Papa Su and Mama Su had left him plenty.

Gu Yuanting held his chopsticks, sitting blankly at the dining table. Thinking of Ranran in the ward, he couldn’t swallow a bite.

He picked up a few grains of rice with his chopsticks, but thinking that Ranran was still hungry, his heart ached. He quickly put down his chopsticks, almost wanting to spit out the few grains of rice he had eaten, feeling like he had committed a great sin.

Gu Yuanting stared blankly at the dining table, feeling distressed and uneasy.

  1. I didn’t expect Tingting to be the one in postpartum depression but honestly, I’m just relieved it isn’t as serious as what I thought
