Returning from checking the account at the bank, Bai Tu was completely dumbfounded.
Black cards came with dedicated customer service, but Bai Tu sat on pins and needles in the VIP reception room. He waited as the staff took the card to verify the account holder and check the balance—with principal and interest combined, there was over 3.2 million yuan in the card.
This scared Bai Tu, a little demon who had never seen the world before, completely senseless on the spot.
This was simply a massive pie falling from the heavens. Though it came at just the right time, this pie was too big—no one dared to catch it.
Secretly, Bai Tu couldn’t help but wonder if the Principal, in a moment of muddleheadedness, had gone and robbed some human. Otherwise, where on earth did he get so much money?
Before this, the kindergarten had clearly been so poor that they could barely keep the pot boiling. In the end, they had scraped together a tiny bit of money just to barely maintain everyone’s basic living expenses.
Rong Sui was no less shocked than he was. He had originally thought he joined a kindergarten on the verge of bankruptcy, but who would have thought that the elusive Principal was actually a hidden tycoon?
Furthermore, his mind was much clearer than Bai Tu’s. No matter where the Principal got this money, it certainly couldn’t be illegal funds. In today’s law-abiding society, who would dare to store illegal income so brazenly in a bank under their real name? Wouldn’t that be begging to be investigated?
So he comforted the dazed Bai Tu, telling him not to worry too much. Now, not only could they build a new play area, but they could also build a whole new dormitory and classroom building.
Consoled a bit by his words, Bai Tu’s tiny, courage-lacking heart still trembled slightly. After thinking it over, he went back to the Principal’s place to confirm once more. However, after knocking for ages without any response, he returned crestfallen to discuss with Rong Sui how to use the money.
Originally, they had only planned to build a new play area, renovate two student dormitories, and add some teaching equipment—after all, they were so poor that the money had to be prioritized for the cubs first.
But now that they had money, their ambitions grew a little larger.
The two discussed and decided that besides building the play area, they could also construct a new teaching building. After all, the current teaching building was extremely old and the walls were already cracking. Not only was it unsafe to stay in, but it was also detrimental to recruiting students for the next semester.
Actually, Bai Tu had also wanted to build a new dormitory building. He saw how grand and upscale other kindergartens’ teaching and dormitory buildings were. Unfortunately, Rong Sui told him that building a teaching building alone would cost a lot of money, not to mention purchasing teaching equipment, hiring teachers… factoring in everything, 3.2 million wasn’t actually that much.
Only then did the enthusiastic Bai Tu drop the idea and settle down, his eyes shining as he waited for Rong Sui to lay out the next steps.
Rong Sui didn’t really understand these things either. Besides, he was a newcomer. Normally, Bai Tu should be the one making the decisions, but Bai Tu had a “I’ll listen to whatever you say” attitude, which put immense pressure on Rong Sui. Under his expectant gaze, Rong Sui could only say, “I don’t know much about this either. We can find a construction team to ask first.”
Bai Tu immediately pressed, “Where do we find one?” Having lived in the school year-round, he was half-ignorant about many things in the human world.
Rong Sui pondered for a moment and said, “Actually, my dad does construction. If you don’t mind, I can ask him.”
Back when their village’s land was requisitioned, Rong Sui had moved to the city with his dad. Everything in the city was expensive. At first, life was hard for the father and son. Later, introduced by a friend, his dad went to work on construction sites, and life gradually improved. After working on-site for a few years, his dad and a friend started their own construction team and began taking on projects everywhere. Although they were much better off materially, father and son rarely saw each other. Speaking of which, Rong Sui hadn’t seen his dad for two or three months.
Rong Sui had been a bit hesitant when he brought it up, mainly worried that Bai Tu might mind. But upon hearing this, Bai Tu was quite delighted and urged Rong Sui to ask quickly.
He had no choice but to pull out his phone and call his dad, Rong Fu.
The phone was picked up almost instantly, and Rong Fu’s gruff voice came through: “My dear son, how is work going?”
Hearing the noisy background noise on the phone, which faintly included the sound of operating machinery, Rong Sui asked, “It’s great. Are you at a construction site?”
Rong Fu stubbed out his cigarette butt and found a quiet place to focus on speaking to his son. “Yeah, doing the project acceptance. This project is wrapping up, and I should be back in a month or so. Do you have enough living expenses? Is anyone bullying you at work?”
An involuntary smile appeared on Rong Sui’s face. “Everything is fine. The school is good, and my colleagues are easy to get along with. I don’t lack money, keep it for yourself, and find me a stepmother soon.”
On the phone, Rong Fu chuckled twice. “Always worrying about blind nonsense. Dad is saving all of it for you to get a wife.”
Having not met for a long time, the father and son chatted for quite a while before Rong Sui remembered the business at hand. He asked if his dad could recommend a reliable construction team, as the kindergarten needed to build a new teaching building.
Hearing this, Rong Fu wanted to do it himself. He could charge cost price to help his precious son gain some face in front of his bosses so they would take better care of him. But by the time he got back, the summer vacation would probably be half over. Rong Sui flatly refused, “No, we can’t wait for you over there.”
The eager father instantly felt a bit deflated, letting out a long sigh over the phone. “Then let your Uncle Xiong do it. The project in his hands just finished, so he’s free.”
Rong Sui agreed. Ignoring his moping father who had just been rejected, he went to contact his Uncle Xiong.
Uncle Xiong’s full name was Xiong Dazhuang. He was the good friend who had originally pulled his dad out to contract construction projects, and he had watched Rong Sui grow up. Hearing that it was his nephew’s workplace that wanted to build a teaching building, he agreed immediately. “Alright, I’ll bring some people over to take a look tomorrow.”
…
Xiong Dazhuang lived up to his name—he was tall, heavily built, dark-skinned, and stood there looking just like a bear. Because it was his nephew’s workplace, he even brought gifts when he arrived. Upon seeing Bai Tu, he grabbed his hand with a burst of enthusiasm, then forced a bottle of Maotai into Bai Tu’s hands.
Bai Tu looked at him, trembling, “Y-y-you… are… a B-bear…”
Xiong Dazhuang shook his hand warmly and said, “Teacher Bai, don’t be polite! We’ll be counting on you to take care of our Rong Sui in the future!” With that, he slapped Bai Tu on the shoulder twice, nearly flattening the timid little demon.
It was Rong Sui who couldn’t bear to watch any longer and rescued Bai Tu.
Hiding behind Rong Sui, Bai Tu rubbed his chest vigorously to keep from fainting on the spot. He thought to himself that Rong Sui was indeed a powerful demon with a formidable background—even a randomly summoned uncle was so terrifying.
It was rare for the uncle and nephew to meet, so they chatted while walking into the teaching building. Rong Sui took him around, explained the budget and plans, and asked for his opinion first.
Having been in construction for so many years, Xiong Dazhuang knew the prices of various building materials like the back of his hand. With a quick mental calculation, he knew the approximate cost; the kindergarten’s budget was more than enough to build a three-story teaching building.
After inspecting the school ground further, Xiong Dazhuang conversed with the accompanying engineer for a bit and then told Rong Sui that he could bring the construction team to start work tomorrow.
He wouldn’t take his portion of the wages; the school only needed to pay for the materials and the workers’ wages. This way, the school would save a lot of money.
After thinking it over, Rong Sui didn’t stand on ceremony with his uncle. Xiong Dazhuang was a straightforward, man-of-his-word type of person; since he had said it, he wasn’t just being polite. This favor could be returned in other ways in the future, and pushing back might only make Xiong Dazhuang angry.
In the evening after classes, Rong Sui went out to eat with Xiong Dazhuang. The uncle and nephew drank alcohol and chatted about their recent lives.
Xiong Dazhuang seemed exceptionally interested in the kindergarten, asking in meticulous detail about who else was there, looking as if he wanted to conduct a population census on the school.
Rong Sui was frightened by the level of detail in his questions. He quickly poured him a glass of liquor and teased, “Uncle Xiong, do you do population censuses as a side job?”
Xiong Dazhuang took a sip of the liquor, smacked his lips with relish, and seeing Rong Sui’s indifferent attitude, spoke with a slurred tongue: “Don’t take this lightly. That kindergarten of yours is not simple. Your dad just doesn’t know about it yet, otherwise, he definitely wouldn’t let you go there.”
His face was flushed red and his tongue was tangled, but he was still lecturing Rong Sui, “Society is so complicated nowadays. Your dad went through so much to raise you, he absolutely wouldn’t want you staying in a wolf’s den.”
Rong Sui was left with a forehead full of question marks. He thought to himself that with the old and the young in the kindergarten, and with Bai Tu being so feather-brained, it wasn’t clear who the real wolf was.
However, you couldn’t reason with a drunk person. Recognizing this truth well, Rong Sui humored him with quick agreements, coaxed him into a taxi, and sent him back.
…
The next day, Xiong Dazhuang brought his team to the kindergarten.
Because school was not out yet and there was still preliminary preparation to be done, construction hadn’t officially started. Xiong Dazhuang took the engineer around the entire school to measure data, as they needed to create a 3D model on the computer for confirmation before building.
The little cubs continued their classes as usual. However, Rong Sui noticed that the cubs had been going out for activities much less lately, and during recess, they stayed obediently in the classroom. At first, Rong Sui didn’t understand what was going on, thinking the cubs just didn’t want to play outside because of the hot weather—until he overheard Bi Fang speaking near a corner.
Bi Fang had dragged Wen Tun, who wanted to sneak out to play, to the corner of the wall, lecturing him sternly, “The outside is full of monsters. Do you want to be eaten?”
Wen Tun shrank his neck, clutching the hem of his clothes, not daring to speak.
“If you dare to run out alone next time, I’ll beat you!” Seeing that he didn’t speak, Bi Fang grew even angrier and couldn’t help but tug at Wen Tun’s little topknot.
Tugged painfully, Wen Tun covered his head and burst into tears on the spot.
Bi Fang: “…”
Bi Fang hadn’t expected him to cry so easily. He took two steps back in dismay, then scratched his head in frustration and threatened in a low voice, “Stop crying! If you cry again, I’ll beat you!”
Wen Tun looked at him with teary eyes and cried even louder.
Hearing the noise, Long Ya’s face darkened. He rushed over and pinned Bi Fang to the ground, and the two cubs instantly tangled into a brawl.
Rong Sui, who had witnessed the whole process: “…………”

…
After getting used to the rhythm of the kindergarten, Rong Sui quickly fit in.
Every day, he woke up early to lead the cubs in morning exercises and then teach. During the second outdoor activity period, Bai Tu would take over, and he would go to cook lunch. Aunt Wang was also delighted that he was cooking. Now that they had ample funds, she had become generous when buying groceries, so Rong Sui changed up the menu daily to feed them. When the cubs had their height and weight checked, they had all gained quite a bit of weight.
Among them, Wen Tun was the chubbiest. His arms and legs were round and chubby like lotus roots, soft to the touch, and dimpling with every poke. Every time Rong Sui saw him, he couldn’t help but pinch him. Wen Tun had been afraid of him at first, but after eating plenty of the food Rong Sui cooked, he was no longer afraid. Every day, he followed behind Rong Sui like a little shadow, calling out “Teacher Rong, Teacher Rong” in a sweet voice.
By early July, schools began to start their summer vacations, and the design plan for the new teaching building was finalized. The cubs stopped classes early to clear out the area of the teaching building, and construction was about to begin.
