PRYM CH94: A Million
Cheng Huanzhen paused for a moment, then said, “Otherwise, I’m going to get a hotel employee to open the door.”
After a long silence, his Little Uncle said aggrievedly, “Then… then you go find them.”
Cheng Huanzhen was momentarily stunned. The person was right inside the door, yet he was telling him to get an employee to open it?
His Little Uncle… he…?
He immediately turned, strode back into his room, and after dialing the front desk, he immediately returned to his Little Uncle’s door. He knocked rapidly, his mouth set in a firm line, and asked, “Little Uncle? What’s wrong with you?”
As soon as he asked, Cheng Huanzhen felt that questioning him like this was far too inefficient. He simply took out his phone and started a video call with his Little Uncle.
The video call ringtone sounded for a while, then suddenly a “thud” came from inside the room, the sound of something falling to the ground. The video call was not picked up.
His Little Uncle shouted a reply from inside the door, “Hey, Nephew, don’t worry, it’s nothing serious, it’s just, it’s just…”
His Little Uncle stammered, sounding troubled, and didn’t finish.
Cheng Huanzhen was growing anxious. But all his anxiety could only produce one sentence: “Little Uncle, pick up the phone.”
Fortunately, the hotel employee arrived at that moment. After confirming the situation, the employee quickly swiped the card to open the door.
The moment the door opened, Cheng Huanzhen strode into the room. He immediately saw his Little Uncle by the head of the bed.
His Little Uncle was sitting against the headboard with his legs bent. His head was down and his hair was disheveled. The strands that were usually so full of life were now a complete mess on his shoulders, with quite a few falling in front of his face, obscuring most of it.
The quilt on the bed was in disarray, with half of it having fallen to the floor. On the floor by the side of the bed closest to the door, his Little Uncle’s phone lay face up, the screen still lit up from the call that had just been disconnected for timing out.
The employee asked with concern, “Sir, is there anything I can help you with?”
“No,” his Little Uncle said, his hands pressed on the bed and his head still lowered. His voice trembled slightly. “Nephew, ask the others to leave.”
After he said that, the room was soon left with just the two of them.
Cheng Huanzhen sat down on the edge of the bed, asking his Little Uncle, at a loss, “Little Uncle, what’s wrong?”
Hearing the sound of the door closing, Cheng Yiming finally relaxed his tense shoulders. He turned his head in Cheng Huanzhen’s direction and looked up.
The disheveled hair obscuring his face fell to the sides, revealing a pair of vacant eyes that were barely focused.
Cheng Huanzhen froze. He instinctively made a judgment, a bad premonition forming in his mind. He immediately reached out a hand and waved it slightly in front of his Little Uncle’s eyes.
Cheng Huanzhen hesitated and called out softly, “Little Uncle?”
His Little Uncle’s pupils focused slightly, but his gaze ultimately landed on his hand.
“Are you waving something in front of my eyes? Hmm—I can’t see it clearly.”
His Little Uncle’s voice sounded aggrieved and sad. He lowered his head, curled his legs up, and hugged his knees, saying in a low voice, “Anyway, it’s just as you see now, Nephew. I… I can’t see things clearly today.”
His Little Uncle paused, then quickly added, “Ah, but you don’t have to worry. This is just a minor, intermittent problem. It will get better on its own in a few days. I’m already used to it!”
Cheng Huanzhen: “…’A little hard to see’?”
Cheng Huanzhen felt like he didn’t understand that phrase. He couldn’t even see his hand waving in front of his face. This… wasn’t this blindness?!
Yet his Little Uncle was still smiling. A faint, weak smile, not as energetic as usual, one that seemed to take some effort.
This was the first time Cheng Huanzhen had ever encountered such a situation. His right hand froze stiffly in mid-air. He felt an urge to try and touch his Little Uncle’s eyes, but he didn’t quite dare. He remained frozen in mid-air for several seconds,茫然, but ultimately didn’t forget his etiquette toward an “elder,” slowly lowering his hand.
His lips were pressed into a tight, straight line, his brow deeply furrowed. He said, “Little Uncle, do you have medicine? We’re going back to the capital today. Before that, do we need to go to a local hospital first?”
His Little Uncle’s voice became anxious. “Wait! Hey, Nephew, listen carefully. I already told you it’s not a big deal. We don’t need to go back to the capital, and we definitely don’t need to go to the hospital!”
After he finished, he lowered his head and patted his hands here and there on the bed several times. Before Cheng Huanzhen could realize what he was doing, he saw his Little Uncle’s hand land on his left hand, and his other hand immediately grabbed his arm.
…Oh, his Little Uncle was looking for his hand.
His Little Uncle gripped his arm tightly, his vacant eyes “glaring” fiercely into empty space.
…Oh, his Little Uncle was trying to glare at him.
His Little Uncle said, “I… I didn’t notice how much medicine was left in the bottle when I was packing. I finished it last night. Just help me contact Uncle Wang and have him send me some more! …It’s a special medication, it works really well!”
This… only requires medicine??
Cheng Huanzhen was bewildered and at a loss. He rarely got sick and had never concerned himself with other people’s affairs. He thought about it seriously but couldn’t reach a conclusion.
He was silent for a moment, then made a decision. “Little Uncle, I’ll contact Uncle Wang first. Wait for me.”
He gently patted his Little Uncle’s hand that was tightly gripping his arm. His Little Uncle seemed to hesitate (was he… worried he would secretly go out and call for an ambulance…?), but eventually, he slowly released his arm.
His Little Uncle tried to keep his expression firm and said seriously, “Okay. Then remember to take my room key with you.”
Cheng Huanzhen nodded. Realizing his Little Uncle couldn’t see, he answered again, “Okay.”
He bent down to pull the half of the quilt on the floor back onto the bed, picked up his Little Uncle’s phone and placed it on the headboard, thought for a moment, then pushed the phone from the headboard back into his Little Uncle’s palm, and told him, “Don’t move, wait for me,” before finally going out.
He returned to his own room, closed the door, and found that his palm was covered in sweat. He took out his phone and mis-tapped the screen several times before finally finding the old butler’s number.
How strange. His fingers seemed to be trembling. Why? He didn’t know.
Then he’d just call the old butler first.
The old butler answered quickly, very surprised by Cheng Huanzhen’s call. “Young Master Huanzhen?”
Cheng Huanzhen greeted him politely, “Uncle Wang, good afternoon.”
He paused for half a second to choose his words, then quickly informed the old butler of the situation and asked earnestly, “Uncle Wang, what’s going on with Little Uncle’s condition? He says there’s no need to go to the hospital or return to the capital for this, that just taking a special medication is enough. Is that true?”
The old butler asked reproachfully, “Young Master Huanzhen, you two went on a trip? If Mr. Cheng finds out about this…唉, never mind, Young Master, as long as you both know what you’re doing. But since Young Master Yiming had a flare-up during the trip, it’s best to bring him back soon. It’s safer at home.”
“Young Master Yiming’s condition is rather complex. The hospital can’t really treat it, he can only take special medication to suppress it. But you don’t need to worry too much, Young Master Huanzhen. Young Master Yiming’s health is very good. Apart from temporary blindness and slightly slower reactions during his intermittent episodes, there are no other serious symptoms.”
Cheng Huanzhen gripped his phone tightly. “…”
The old butler said, “Hold on, Young Master Huanzhen, let me check Young Master Yiming’s medicine…”
“Hiss—”
There was the sound of rummaging from the other end of the line. Suddenly, it went quiet. The old butler said, troubled, “Oh no, Young Master, Young Master Yiming’s medicine… there’s only one bottle left at home. One bottle has 7 pills, only enough for one week.”
“But Young Master Yiming needs to take it every day. We need to order next week’s medicine now. It’s shipped from the M country, so time is tight.”
Cheng Huanzhen noticed an unspoken meaning in the old butler’s words and immediately asked, “Is there some difficulty in ordering the medicine?”
The old butler sighed. “Young Master Yiming’s medicine is ordered every three months. Each time it costs around two hundred thousand M dollars, which is over a million in our currency. Mr. Cheng has always approved this expense in the past, but as you know, Young Master Yiming had a fight with Mr. Cheng over you a while ago. If he were to ask Mr. Cheng to approve the money for the medicine now…”
The old butler said tactfully, “You might as well bring Young Master Yiming back early. Let him apologize to Mr. Cheng, bow his head, and Mr. Cheng will surely cover the cost of the medicine for him.”
Little Uncle… had a fight with Grandfather for him?
Apologize. Bow his head. Only then could he get the medicine money from Grandfather?
Cheng Huanzhen was unwilling. Cheng Huanzhen felt very unhappy.
Cheng Huanzhen: “Uncle Wang, if I advance the cost of the medicine for Little Uncle, does that mean we don’t need Grandfather’s approval?”
The old butler hesitated. “That… yes, Young Master Huanzhen. But this is over a million, after all…”
Cheng Huanzhen wasn’t sure what the old butler was worried about. Was he worried he didn’t have the money?
In fact, he didn’t remember how much money he had. He didn’t care about it and almost never checked. But he watched the company’s eight, nine, and ten-figure financial numbers change every day. He thought… a seven-figure sum starting with a 1 wasn’t a lot of money.
He had worked at the company for so long and received a dividend after every successful project. So, he should definitely have that much money, right?
In any case, it couldn’t possibly be so bad that he would have to bow his head and apologize to his grandfather for it! Cheng Huanzhen thought, somewhat angrily.
So Cheng Huanzhen said, “No need to worry, Uncle Wang. Please tell me how to make the payment. As for returning to the capital and sending the medicine, I will discuss it with my Little Uncle first. Please do not tell my grandfather about this matter. Thank you, Uncle Wang.”
After hanging up, Cheng Huanzhen quickly returned to his Little Uncle’s room. He found it hard to describe whether his mood had become more uneasy or slightly more relaxed after that phone call.
The relaxation came from the old butler confirming that his Little Uncle’s problem wasn’t serious, not a big deal, and could be suppressed with continuous medication.
The uneasiness came from the fact that, for his Little Uncle, such a symptom was considered not serious, not a big deal.
When he entered the room, his Little Uncle was sitting quietly at the head of the bed with his head down. His hair was neater than before, but it looked like he had just run his fingers through it to tidy it up.
His Little Uncle’s hair was too long. It really needed to be brushed with a comb.
Cheng Huanzhen called out, “Little Uncle.”
He walked into the room, took a disposable comb from the hotel’s amenities on the table, and sat down on the edge of the bed. He felt it wouldn’t be good to make his Little Uncle search all over the bed for his hand again, so he proactively extended a hand to him, touching him to let him know he was beside him.
His Little Uncle turned his head toward the sound of his voice and smiled. “Nephew, you’re back!”
Cheng Huanzhen replied with an “Mm.” “Little Uncle, I’ve spoken with Uncle Wang. He suggests I take you back to the capital today. We should go home first and get through this episode before coming out again. What do you think?”
He genuinely thought this was a good option.
However, as soon as his Little Uncle heard this, the corners of his mouth immediately turned down. “I don’t want to! I waited so long for your vacation to start. The break is so short, every day that passes is one less. How can we go back? Unless you can come out to play with me again after your next semester starts!”
Skipping class was, of course, not an option.
Cheng Huanzhen was troubled and tried to persuade him, “But Little Uncle, you can’t even see now. How can you travel?”
His Little Uncle said self-righteously, “Even though I can’t see, you can. You can just be my eyes, can’t you, Nephew?”
