    Chapter Index

On L1001 of Cetus, snow fell yearโ€‘round. Since its discovery, more than 90% of the time the planet had been blanketed in snowfall, earning it the name Snow Star.

Two centuries ago it had been transformed from a barren wasteland into a residential zone. Its picturesque snowy scenery attracted wealthy elites, but most never lived there permanently; the yearโ€‘round residency never even reached 1% of the total population.

Song Yu scowled as he skimmed the information scrolling across the virtual screen.

Snow Starโ€™s economy once thrived on tourism. But four years ago, restrictions tightened. That yearโ€™s GDP halved, and for the past three years it had dropped lower each cycle.

Why would the empire cut off so much lucrative tax revenue?

He racked his mind: what happened that year? Back then, all his energy went into academics and fending off his idiot brother Song Ke. Heโ€™d paid little attention to such โ€œminorโ€ matters.

Did his father already sense something was off back then?

The thought flashed throughโ€”Song Yu shook his head. Improbable. If the King had realized that early, he would have also recognized Ji Lingโ€™s problem. Otherwise why keep the man close even now?

    โ€œCome eat.โ€
Rong Shiโ€™s calm voice floated from the kitchen.

The fragrance of sweetโ€‘andโ€‘sour ribs rose into his nose. Song Yu instantly abandoned speculation, washed his hands, and sat obediently, bowls ready.

Rong Shi carried the dish to the tableโ€”only to find a greedy catโ€™s eyes glinting at him.
    โ€œโ€ฆYour droolโ€™s dripping.โ€

Song Yu already had chopsticks in hand, and the moment the dish landed he snapped a piece up into his mouth.

The bright tang of vinegar, the sweet caramelized sugar, the soft fatty meat yielding into crisp edgesโ€”perfection.

In that moment, Song Yu fully understood what it meant to have a spouse.

โ€œKeeping me hooked on this and still demanding I quit sugar? Canโ€™t you be a normal human?โ€ Song Yu complained, offering him a bite.

Rong Shi calmly leaned forward and bit. โ€œI feed you. You quit yours. Easy.โ€

    โ€œโ€ฆThen I wonโ€™tโ€”โ€

Rong Shi sat and lifted his chopsticks. โ€œResisting temptation is what makes a true alpha.โ€

Mouth full of rice, Song Yu muttered, โ€œI donโ€™t need to be an alpha. Iโ€™ve no preference for gender.โ€

    โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ Rong Shi.

Halfway through the meal, his terminal buzzed. Qing Liโ€™s voice boomed from the audioโ€‘call:
    โ€œYou insist on going?โ€

The two men glanced at each other.
    โ€œYes.โ€

    Silence.

โ€œIโ€™ll send you the First Corps Commanderโ€™s contact. But do not contact him unless absolutely necessary.โ€ A pause. โ€œAnd donโ€™t force it. Prioritize safety above all.โ€

โ€œGood.โ€ Rong Shiโ€™s eyes flickered. โ€œWhen I return, there are things I want to ask you.โ€

โ€œHmph. At this point, you still have things you donโ€™t understand?โ€ Qing Li snorted, clearly displeased.

While they spoke, Song Yu stuffed three more ribs into his mouth. This tasteโ€”I could eat ten plates.

Then the terminal chimed again. Song Yu rose to the living room.

    Chestnutโ€”the blackโ€‘uniformed shadow guardโ€”appeared on projection.
โ€œYour Highness, the ship will dock at Civilian Spaceport S8 at 1400 hours. Only ten minutes. Please do not delay.โ€

    โ€œGot it. What else?โ€

โ€œThe names are too many. Garlic and Spinach request more manpower, but my own lines are stretched thin.โ€

After extracting the database at the base, they had disconnected and exported the personnel list. Qin Luo was categorizing and assigning shadows. Song Yuโ€™s order was each person be tailed by at least two guards in shiftsโ€”ready to seize all targets in one sweep when the time came.

โ€œHow many do you need? Tell Qin Luo, say theyโ€™re from me.โ€

    โ€œYes, sir.โ€

Transmission cut. Song Yu checked his watchโ€”three hours until docking. Plenty of time.

As he straightened, his gaze caught the tea set on a wooden shelf. Among the purple clay pots sat a small white porcelain bottle, conspicuously out of place.

He uncorked itโ€”inside lay crystalline granules like coarse salt.

    Rong Shi entered just then.

โ€œโ€ฆWhatโ€™s this doing here?โ€ Song Yu asked, handing it over.

    โ€œSalt. Father put it there.โ€

    โ€œโ€ฆSalt, in a tea set?โ€

Rong Shiโ€™s lip curled faintly, uncharacteristically sardonic. โ€œFather liked a pinch of salt in his tea. Said it was distinguished.โ€

Song Yu chuckled. โ€œDonโ€™t tell me this is 3S tribute salt from Salt Star?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYes.โ€ Rong Shiโ€™s face returned blank. โ€œPretentious nonsense. Do nobles actually drink like this?โ€

โ€œNot many. I only know one person who does.โ€

    โ€“

After lunch, they had no time to linger. Motion sensors dimmed the house systems into standby.

Song Yu lingered wistfully at the neglected yard. โ€œNo time to weed with you.โ€

โ€œHome wonโ€™t run away,โ€ Rong Shi said simply, lacing his fingers with his. โ€œNext time.โ€

    โ€œAnd the sweetโ€‘sour ribs?โ€ Song Yu pressed.

    โ€œโ€ฆThey ran away.โ€

    โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆโ€

At 13:00 they arrived at the spaceport. Quiet. They bought ordinary tickets to Ursa Minor, avoided the VIP lounge, and sat in the common waiting hall.

Song Yu yawned and tucked onto Rong Shiโ€™s shoulder. โ€œโ€ฆSleepy.โ€

Rong Shi angled himself so his cat rested easier. โ€œTold you to rest earlier. You never listen.โ€

โ€œMy hands are still sore. Thatโ€™s your fault.โ€ Song Yu cracked his knuckles menacingly.

โ€œโ€ฆ.โ€ Rong Shi massaged his hand quietly. โ€œDonโ€™t provoke me next time.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆProvoke? That was a challenge, and you donโ€™t even know the words for it.โ€

All the while, Rong Shiโ€™s gaze swept unobtrusively across the lobby beneath the brim of his cap.

At the ticket machines, his eyes met a young alphaโ€™s. The boy flinched, then turned back, stealing glances.

Moments later, he came over. โ€œHey, arenโ€™t you Chairman Rong Shi?โ€ Eyes wide with excitement.

    โ€œโ€ฆAnd you are?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m Chen Zhenyuโ€™s brother! Heโ€™s at Central Academy tooโ€”he worships you! Showed me dozens of your videos, man, youโ€™re amazing!โ€

Polite but cold, Rong Shi didnโ€™t rebuff but gave little.

The alpha, emboldened, sat down eagerly. โ€œSo what brings you here? Visiting home?โ€

โ€œMm. Taking my partner to see my family.โ€

    โ€œโ€ฆGoing back to Academy after?โ€

    โ€œTook two daysโ€™ leave. Ursa Minor trip.โ€

The boyโ€™s eyes flickered oddly. Knew too much.

โ€œโ€ฆlots of fun things there,โ€ he muttered, then excused himself.

    Song Yuโ€™s lips curved faintly. โ€œObvious act.โ€

Two oโ€™clock. The AI announced boarding. Rong Shi shook Song Yu awake.

They passed security. Song Yu, actually half asleep, muttered murderously. โ€œIt took you too long last night. Next time, Iโ€™ll cut your time in half.โ€

โ€œโ€ฆ.โ€ Rong Shiโ€™s face darkened. Cut what exactly?

Meanwhile, from the lobby, the young alpha watched them disappear into the boarding tunnel. He typed quickly:
    [Theyโ€™re heading for Ursa Minor.]

But the ship tail suddenly decoupledโ€”splitting apart midโ€‘flight, veering off.

[01: Idiot took the baitโ€”yo yo, check it out!]
[00: Target account identified. Check it out.]

Song Yu sneered. โ€œBlind guessโ€”Queen or Song Ke.โ€

Inside, Rong Shi wiped his face with a hot towel and asked 01, โ€œResult of the DNA test?โ€

The AI rolled out of his device into a metal orb, projecting genetic analysis files.

Song Yu peeled an orange casually. โ€œClone?โ€

    Rong Shi frowned, reading. โ€œโ€ฆTwins.โ€

The genomes were highly similar, but not identical.

    Relief, mixed with heaviness.

โ€œโ€ฆJi Ming only had one son.โ€

01 reported: โ€œAll databases confirm, one child only. No marriage record. No parental info.โ€

Song Yu frowned. โ€œIf truly unmarried, then either illegitimate twinsโ€ฆ or artificially generated from the gene center. But a legitimate center would always leave file traces.โ€

Even illegitimate births were logged with both parents. But hereโ€”nothing.

Why did Ji Ming record only one child, leaving the other unregistered, a ghost with no citizenship from birth?

Arriving at Cetus, Snow Star, they again passed security. Through the T1 hangar, a world of white swept their eyes.

โ€œACHOO!โ€ Song Yu sneezed at the cold wind.

Weight fell on his shoulders. A coat.

โ€œWear it. I donโ€™t like taking care of patients,โ€ Rong Shi said.

โ€œLiar.โ€ Song Yu slipped in. โ€œYou enjoyed caring for Mian Mian.โ€

    โ€œโ€ฆโ€ฆYou saw wrong.โ€

โ€œNo point hiding. Youโ€™ve got a thing for frail beauties, right?โ€ Song Yu teased low at his ear.

Rong Shi jerked slightly. Big Catโ€™s face flashed in his mind. His ears reddened instantly.

โ€œโ€ฆYour ears are red,โ€ Song Yu started gleefullyโ€”until someone bumped into him from behind.

He dodged fast. Rong Shi caught his waist, shielding him, and his sharp eyes locked on the figure.

A middleโ€‘aged beta, tall, hair slick, round glasses gleaming, overcoat draping to his shins, polished shoes.

โ€œSorry, sorry. Someone pushed me behind. Did I hurt you?โ€ The man stammered with gloved hands clasped.

    โ€œโ€ฆNo,โ€ Rong Shi replied flatly.

    โ€œGood, good.โ€ He exhaled, about to leaveโ€”

But Song Yu seized his arm. โ€œIn such a rushโ€”where to?โ€

    The beta stiffened.

โ€œMy sonโ€™s waiting at home,โ€ he replied tightly.

Song Yu sneered. โ€œSince when did you have a sonโ€ฆ Uncle Yin?โ€

He mouthed the last words silently.

The betaโ€™s eyes flickeredโ€”then regret shadowed his face. Glancing around warily, he lowered his voice. โ€œโ€ฆTalk outside.โ€

Song Yu released him lazily, turning to Rong Shi. โ€œCome on.โ€

Rong Shiโ€™s eyes lingered. Something was wrong. When Song Yu revealed his identity, the man hadnโ€™t panickedโ€”he had relaxed.
